KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CP) -
Six relatives of an Afghan man, shot to death
last week by a Canadian soldier at a
checkpoint, were interviewed for the first
time Wednesday by military investigators.
Statements were taken from those members
who witnessed the tragedy and came following
an impromptu visit with the commanding
officer of the Canadian provincial
reconstruction team (PRT).
This was also the first time the family of
Nasrat Ali Hassan met face-to-face with a
senior Canadian official after accusing
soldiers of firing indiscriminately and
refusing to rush the dying man to hospital.
By all accounts, it was cordial meeting,
free of rancour and recrimination
"They just wanted to meet me and chat
with me. We chatted," said Col. Tom Doucette.
"I again expressed my condolences on
behalf of the Canadian government and
the Canadian people."
Shortly after the March 14 shooting,
Doucette wrote an official letter of
sympathy, which was delivered to
Ali Hassan's widow by a senior member
of the Afghan police service.
Earlier this week, the Canadian government
expressed its remorse in a more traditional
Afghan way by spending $100 on a gift, a
sheep.
As compensation for the shooting, the family
said it wants to immigrate to Canada and
for the federal government to pay for
educating the tin pot-maker's six children.

Charles, I'm incredibly proud.
For the first time in more
years than I can remember it felt
as though Canada was a world player.
Our men and women are making a difference over
in Afghanistan -- they're putting their lives on the
line, standing up for our country -- and
finally, a Canadian leader went down into the
'trenches,' so to speak, and acknowledged their
commitment. Bravo Mr. Harper!"
This is typical of the kind of e-mail I have received on
the prime minister's recent trip to Afghanistan.
I have no trouble saying "Bravo Mr. Harper."
But I wonder whether the bravo of our citizens should
be conditional. Should we expect the Afghan
government to allow Abdul Rahman to live as a
free man, even though he is a Christian?
The story may not be as important as the political
contest that Belinda Stronach is in with Bob Rae. But
since we are committing the lives of our sons and
daughters to Afghanistan, should we demand that their
government treat Abdul Rahman and the rest of its
citizens with some Canadian common decency?
Rahman was born a Muslim 42 years ago.
He left Afghanistan when he was a little boy and while
working with a Christian aid organization converted to
Christianity. He moved back to Afghanistan three years
ago. Strike 1. He moved in with his father and shared
with him the fact that he had converted to Christianity.
Strike 2. Running afoul of the law, he came into contact
with the police. They found in his possession a
green-coloured Christian Bible. Strike 3.
In a country that Canadian troops are now sworn to
defend, Sharia law is the code.
While the dreaded Taliban may not be in charge of the
courts, the men who wear the robes of Afghan justice
aren't the kind that Spencer Tracy represented in the
movies. Judgment at Kabul is nothing like
Judgment at Nuremburg, except for one thing.
The sentence for serving Jesus may be the same as
for serving Hitler.
Judge Ansarullah Mawlavezada, knowing that he has
a western audience paying at least a thimble of
attention, makes a point of saying that he respects
all religions. He says that he does not support the
dreaded Taliban's enforcement of Sharia law.
This was the crowd that amputated limbs in a soccer
stadium in Kabul that is now, mercifully, being used
for soccer. The lucky sinners got amputations.
Others were beheaded. Some of those others were
women who made the mistake of not walking
several steps behind their husbands or making the
mistake of going shopping without being escorted
by their husbands or the even bigger mistake of secretly
teaching their daughters to read.
The judge wants you to know that he is not the
beast that the Taliban would want him to be.
Nevertheless he says to the court,
"If Rahman doesn't regret his conversion to Christianity,
the punishment will be enforced on him and the
punishment is death."
While we are saying bravo to the prime minister for
supporting our troops and while many are talking about
the guts the prime minister displayed in flying into a
combat zone, might we ask Mr. Harper to send one
simple message to the government of Afghanistan?
"We Canadians are not prepared to shed one more
drop of blood to support your government if the sword
of your government draws the blood of Abdul Rahman."
Standing up for Canada means standing
up for Mr. Rahman's choice to worship
his Lord.
God bless Canada and our prime minister.

OTTAWA (CP) - Indian Affairs Minister Jim Prentice is
set to announce the first ever federal water standards
for native reserves.
Prentice is expected to name 15 communities most at
risk for waterborne health hazards.
The Conservative government will outline plans to improve
equipment and training before the standards become
mandatory.
Bad drinking water on First Nations was a major
embarrassment for the former Liberals while in
government.
Last October, Canadians were shocked by stories of
illness blamed on dirty water on a northern Ontario
reserve.
One thousand residents of Kashechewan were
evacuated while their water treatment plant was
cleaned up.

John, what do you think of the fact that
these boys could be charged with even
something like murder by June?
JOHN Q. KELLY, HOLLOWAY
FAMILY ATTORNEY:
Well, it’d be good. It’s my understand that what
Mr. Kock was saying is the DA still has to
present the case, and then there’ll be a
determination whether there are actually
charges brought on the murder one charge
or some lesser charge.
But you know, hope springs eternal. It’d be t
errific if that’s what’s going to happen down
the line. And certainly, Mr. Kock has inside
information from his clients as to their
exposure and what could happen in this
case.
DAVE HOLLOWAY,
NATALEE HOLLOWAY’S FATHER:
That’s true. It’s about three months away. You
know, back about six months ago, when I met
with the prosecutor in Aruba on one of my
last trips there, I had indicated to her that
I’d rather wait a little while and you have a
strong case than just present this without
—little or insufficient evidence. So I’m hoping
that they’ll have a strong case.
Dompig has indicated that he’s going to
solve this case. So you know, we’re
optimistically hopeful that they’ll do that.

BUT HERE IS A REALITY TWIST

WENDY MURPHY,
FORMER PROSECUTOR:
Yes, you know, I must be the most cynical
person on the planet because I’ll believe it
when I see it.
I’m just not persuaded that there isn’t another
agenda here, Rita, that there isn’t a reason
—they’re trying to delay the civil case or
they’ve got something else going on where
they just want us to be quit until June for
some strategic reason that I’m unaware of.
Either that, or the Kalpoes have been squeezed
successfully with a threat of prosecution for
something that they can’t get out from under
because there was no way this case was going
to be solved without one of them turning on the
other. And as far as we know, that hasn’t
happened. It may well have happened behind
the scenes, but unless one of them got squeezed
or there’s some other agenda, they’re just trying
to sort of blow smoke for a while until we all
calm down about the civil suit.
I’ll believe it when I see it.
MICKEY SHERMAN,
DEFENSE ATTORNEY:
It’s bizarre. And I—it kills me to agree with
Wendy, but I have to (laugh)

THEN RITA COSBY ASKS:
If it does go to trial, who would Joran call
as witnesses?
TACOPINA:
I can tell you there are probably about 75 to
100 I’d have on my witness list right off the
bat that are very, very helpful to Joran.
And I really hope that Aruban law enforcement
is investigating all leads, not looking just to
make a case (INAUDIBLE) target to get this
monkey off their back because, Rita, what’s
out there, what’s not been on the airwaves
and in the media, is so powerful as far as
being, you know, really clues to what
happened to Natalee, I hope—and I mean this,
and I know they’re not going to appreciate it,
but I hope there’s some resolve to this case
for them, as well as for my client.

Just quessing will it be the storekeeper
that sold Mrs Van de Sloot that revealing shirt
or the boy joran tossed through the window?
Or maybe the one wearing the belt around his
neck?
or maybe the school teacher that warned
Joran in advance to keep quiet?

Abdullah Khadr to face extradition hearing

Canadian Abdullah Khadr will face an extradition hearing that
could force him to return to the U.S. to face terrorism charges.
A ruling today in Ontario's Superior Court gave the U.S. leave
to seek extradition.
"Today the attorney general of Canada commenced the
extradition process against Abdullah Khadr," prosecutor
Howard Piafsky said following a court appearance.
"We will be seeking his extradition on behalf of our treaty
partner, the United States of America."
Piafsky presented documents to the court on Thursday in
which Federal Justice Minister Vic Toews authorized
prosecutors to begin the extradition process.
The process is set to start on March 30, when prosecutors
meet to discuss a date for the extradition hearing.
The documents also cite five crimes under the Criminal Code
that correspond to the U.S. charges -- including providing
property to benefit a terrorist group.

Khadr, 24, has been in jail since December, when he was
arrested on a U.S. warrant.
In February, the U.S. formally requested extradition of Khadr,
who was indicted in Boston on charges he supplied al Qaeda
with weapons and plotted to kill American soldiers in
Afghanistan.The indictment said Khadr bought the weapons
at the request of his father, Egyptian-born Canadian Ahmed
Said Khadr, an accused al Qaeda financier killed by Pakistani
forces in 2003.
Outside court, Khadr's family struggled with the news that
the Canadian government was seeking his extradition.
"We came to Canada for justice.
We came to Canada 30 years ago for freedom
and justice, and that's what we expect,''
said Khadr's mother, Maha Elsamnah.
"We know God is with us and he will defend
our son."

but we have seen the terrorist in their true actions
beheading, torturing and murdering innocents who
have gone there to establish food and
essentials for these people.

Khadr admits attending an al Qaeda training camp in
Afghanistan when he was 13, but denies being a terrorist.
Each of the five Khadr siblings, all of whom are Canadian
citizens, has at one time or another been separately
accused or investigated for alleged links to terrorism.
Omar Khadr, 19, is the only Canadian held at the
Guantanamo Bay detention camp.
He has been there since he was 16.
He is charged with aiding al Qaeda and murdering a U.S.
medic in Afghanistan in July 2002.
He faces a special military tribunal system for alleged
terrorists that has been widely attacked as unfair.
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, an
international human rights group, has taken up his case
with the aim of getting his military trial suspended.

April Woes!!!!

April flowers. Spring flowers? hmmm
Well April is almost upon me and I will then be faced
with the prospects of taking a low wage job working
inc. weekends in a food establishment in Oshawa
(as thats the only type of jobs available) or continue
paying $384 each month forTransportation to Toronto.
Three different transits and let's notforget the three
coffees each morning.
One at the Go Train station in Oshawa and one at the
Union Station and finally the best at Yonge/Eglington's
Coffee Time. I leave at 6.20am each morning to reach
my job at 9:00am. Leaving time for the famous TTC
problems faced each day.
I have taken later connections and have ended up at
work half an hour later.
So lets take another $100 dollars out of my pay which
when added up yearly comes to $5808 dollars which
I am expected to pay tax on at the end of the year.
I can look for a job in Oshawa.for $5000 less than
what I make and break even.
How can you lose money you never see anyway.
BUT...
working a job at $8.00 and hour can gross me only $1280
and that after taxes will barely pay my mortgage, food/bills
and Travel.
That leaves me nothing else .. but then when you work 6/7
days a week
Why do you need any other money?
That's the way the rich controls us!!!!!

Who Was St. Patrick?
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of
Christianity's most widely known figures.
But for all his celebrity, his life remains somewhat
of a mystery.
Taken Prisoner By Irish Raiders
It is known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to
wealthy parents near the end of the fourth century.
He is believed to have died on March 17, around
460 A.D.
Although his father was a Christian deacon, it has
been suggested that he probably took on the
role because of tax incentives and there is no
evidence that Patrick came from a particularly
religious family.
At the age of sixteen, Patrick was taken prisoner
by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking
his family's estate.
They transported him to Ireland where he spent
six years in captivity.
Guided By Visions
After more than six years as a prisoner, Patrick
escaped.
According to his writing, a voice
—which he believed to be God's
—spoke to him in a dream, telling him it was time
to leave Ireland.
After escaping to Britain, Patrick reported that he
experienced a second revelation—an angel in a
dream tells him to return to Ireland as a missionary.
Bonfires and Crosses
Familiar with the Irish language and culture, Patrick
chose to incorporate traditional ritual into his
lessons of Christianity instead of attempting to
eradicate native Irish beliefs.
For instance, he used bonfires to celebrate Easter
since the Irish were used to honoring their gods
with fire.
He also superimposed a sun, a powerful Irish
symbol, onto the Christian cross to create what
is now called a Celtic cross, so that veneration
of the symbol would seem more natural to the
Irish.

The kirpan decision isn't welcome in Quebec

The Supreme Court of Canada decision allowing Montrealer
Gurbaj Singh Multani to attend school with a kirpan
(a ceremonial dagger that orthodox Sikhs consider part of
their religion) raised a storm in Quebec -- and for good
reason.
In a country where little old ladies cannot board an airplane
with a small pair of manicure scissors, being allowed to
bring a dagger into school seems, to say the least, illogical.
Of course, there is little chance that young Multani or
other religious Sikhs would use their kirpan as a weapon,
but their daggers could be stolen by other students.
The Supreme Court, following a lower court's earlier
judgment, dealt with the argument about security by
micromanaging the issue:
The kirpan should be put in an envelope sewn into the
student's clothes.
In any case, this is beside the point. Little old ladies'
manicure scissors pose no risk either, especially when
they are in a cosmetic bag placed in a suitcase that is
itself stored in an overhead baggage compartment.
The point is that in Canada, there are laws and regulations
preventing the carrying of weapons and possibly
offensive objects in airplanes and schools, and these
laws should be respected by all.
There is a reasonable limit to the extent that Canada
should accommodate religious rights.

ARUBA MOVES ......SLOWLY

Now it’s Mariaine Croes who is heading
the Natalee Holloway case
Gerold Dompig left for Holland along with Public
Prosecutor’s PR (public rep)
ORANJESTAD (AAN): Information we have received indicates that
this weekend, Gerold Dompig along with the public representative
from the Public Prosecutor, Mariaine Croes left for Holland.
The reason is the case of the disappearance of Natalee Holloway
where they will go look for and bring some data that finally Holland
will send a Dutch ground with some more specialized dogs than
Equusearch has to Aruba to look for some trace of the body of
Natalee Holloway.
This means that police believe that Natalee Holloway died in Aruba.
The question arises as to what exactly the reason is for
Mariaine Croes’s travels.
Although not official, we have found out that Mariaine Croes will
head the group that left for Holland and likewise will give information
and attend all meetings in this case along with Commissioner
Gerold Dompig.
This is strange because the chief prosecutor is the one who heads
the case, and perhaps if the chief prosecutor could not go,
the attorney general could go in her place.
However, the mother found that her daughter would represent
the public prosecutor better than the chief prosecutor, and
then Mariaine Croes is the one who will go to Holland.
There are times where you hear comments on the street that
the public prosecutor is being directed by a mother with children
is more reason to give those who think this good reason.
Perhaps this will not be the reason, if they take us to court
again, but what else to think?
We will remain aware of what comes out of this and when
this delegation comes back from Holland, see what the results
of this meeting were.

This morning I opened the Toronto Sun to this article
and cried as I read it.
Did I cry because I was a woman and therefore had
more empathy for this victim?
Obviously not ... as other woman seemed to have no
such feelings. I guess i just have to accept I am
possible a humantarian unlike many living in this world.



Rape defended

"She's not even from here," said one woman.
"I am sure he did it ... but."
But what? "It was peer pressure," she explained.
"It was out of character for him."
The woman called the suspect a "nice" boy.
"He's a good kid," added a teenage girl.
"He just did a stupid thing that night," a man said.
Are they nuts? It was gang rape, wasn't it?
An 18-year-old girl had passed out at a party and
was brutally sexually assaulted, wasn't she?
Three males, one adult and two young offenders,
were all convicted, weren't they?
And yesterday a prison sentence handed down to the
adult. Still, there are some defending him.
"It was alcohol that caused it," said a woman, adding
since it happened in a bedroom, "who knows what went
on."
We know what went on. A girl was gang raped.
But the woman said there are people upset
"because of what happened to Zach."

Because of what happened to Zach?
Zach Wobbes was sentenced yesterday in a Cayuga court
to 26 months in a federal prison -- of which he will serve
18 -- for the vicious crime that took place during his 19th
birthday party.
The Crown wanted three to five and the case may go to
an appeal.
That's what happened to poor Zach.
Now, let's talk about what happened to the girl. It's graphic,
but evidence showed a beer bottle was used in the assault
after she had passed out.
"It was disgusting," said a court official.
"This is a fine young woman who is still having a tough time
of it."
So traumatized she stayed with her mother in her home in
Florida -- waiting for her father, who lives in Hagersville, to
tell her the news.
Anybody who is rationalizing this crime needs to look in the
mirror. Zach's hardships are secondary.
This girl is a victim. Plain and simple. A victim.
And yet there are some here who don't want to hear it,
as Hamilton Spectator city columnist Susan Clairmont
found out this week.
She's written of the horrors of this incident, only to be
peppered with angry e-mails and phone calls.
"I must have received 300," she said.
"I have been called every name in the book."
She must not be from Hagersville, either. But they are
not going to intimidate her. They tried.
"Thanks a lot, you stupid bitch, for something that everyone
had pretty much put behind them," was one of the e-mails
she received from a girl from the Hagersville Secondary
School.
Another described her as an "immature woman who thinks
she is doing good by letting people know this.
Well, you're not. Truth is, deep down in my heart, I know
Zach Wobbes didn't do any of that."
Clairmont, a terrific columnist who has been around the block,
was "shocked" by the reaction.
"It is just like the Jodie Foster movie," she told me.
It definitely does have a ring to it of The Accused, where
everybody in a U.S. town ostracizes a rape victim for testifying
against a popular local. Is that what's going on here?
Hogwash, said the longtime editor and publisher of the
Haldimand Press, Bob Hall. "It's bullsh--," he said.
"And you can spell that out if you want."
He defends his town. And, he said, there's nothing wrong
with the students at the high school, either.
"I can tell you it's no different than any other high school."
He's been at the paper 44 years and calls this a
media-driven crisis.
"You, the major media, attack this area when there's a
negative and never when there's a positive."
He's probably right. Remember the tire fire? I haven't seen
a lot of coverage about Hagersville since.
"Did you know Becky Kellar was born and raised here?"
said Hall's co-worker Bonnie McKinnon of the hockey
player on Canada's Olympic gold medal women's hockey
team.
Bob mentions the restoration of the Cottonwood Mansion
here as a wonderful example of "what the community
achieved."
He's correct on all counts. We do that in the media.
But this was the gang rape of a girl in that town.
But Hall does have a point about the high school, too.
Lots of kids are upset.
Dakota Hill called the culprits "a--holes" who "should
have got more" prison time.
Others in town are also outraged.
"You have got to be kidding," said Andrea Redwood of
the sentences. "I would have given them more."
You can't stereotype a community and Hagersville is a fine
town. But Susan Clairmont was right, too.
This is horrible what happened down here -- the crime
and the response.
Susan is not mistaken either, since I heard the same
sentiment with my own ears from many people trying to
appallingly minimize this heinous crime.
It's difficult to comprehend. "I think (the sentence) was too
harsh," Len Blyleven told his pal Frank Dillon at the
Tim Hortons.
Too harsh? This was a gang rape.
The girl was unconscious and a beer bottle
was used.
Wonder what the appropriate time would
have been had the girl been local?

Judge denies attorney Carlo’s request to declare

Joran van der Sloot no longer a suspect

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Wednesday, the judge’s decision

became known, in the case which attorney Carlo

brought forward, representing Joran van der Sloot.

Attorney Antony Carlo started a case a few weeks

back, to request that the Public Prosecutor declare

that his client Joran van der Sloot is officially no

longer a suspect in the case of the disappearance

of Natalee Holloway, or to instruct the Public

Prosecutor to set a period of time within which

they have to start a case against his client.

Both petitions were denied by judge Smid of Curaçao.

Tiffany Tanner DIED FROM SHOCK

Sudden plunge into cold water killed N.S. kayaker

German authorities say Nova Scotia kayaker Tiffany Tanner
died almost instantly when she fell out of her kayak into a
canal in Hamm 2½ weeks ago.
Prosecutor Heiko Oltmanns said Thursday that autopsy
results revealed the 20-year-old native of Dartmouth,
N.S., went into shock when she hit the cold water.
She died when she couldn't take in enough air,
Oltmanns said.
"It's clear that this death was not the result of a violent
crime. Instead, it was simply a tragic accident," he said
in German.
A canal worker found Tanner's body in a harbour along
the Datteln-Hamm canal Wednesday morning.
The former competitive paddler, who moved to Germany
to work as an au pair, was not wearing a life-jacket or wetsuit
when she went paddling down the canal on Feb. 19.
Her kayaking partners led the way back to the boathouse.
When they looked back, Tanner was gone.
Her overturned kayak was later found under a bridge.
Even as a good swimmer, Tanner would not have had a
chance in the 3 C water, Oltmanns said.
"When the body suddenly falls into very cold water, it
goes into shock and can't breathe properly, causing death
within a matter of seconds."
Oltmanns said there's no indication Tanner fell out of the
kayak because she was intoxicated, but officials have
ordered toxicology tests anyway.
The results are expected in three to four weeks.
Tanner's parents have flown to Hamm to retrieve her body.
