Bermuda has offered compensation of less
than $3,000 plus some legal fees to the
family of a Canadian teen raped and murdered
a decade ago, angering her mother.
Rebecca Middleton, from Belleville, Ontario,
died after being raped, tortured and stabbed on
a beach in the British mid-Atlantic territory on
July 3, 1996.
No one was ever convicted of the 17-year-old's
murder.
The family had sought the maximum
compensation of $100,000 for pain and suffering
caused by her death but the Criminal Injuries
Compensation Board argued that large awards
were only given to dependents of murder victims.
Instead it agreed this week to pay expenses,
such as the cost of flying her body home and
the tickets for the family to watch a trial that
ended in an acquittal. The compensation
amounted to $2,840. In addition the board
agreed to pay $3,000 in legal fees.
She was stabbed nearly 40 times.
