Khadr is dangerous, bail judge concludes

The United States has a
"strong extradition case"
against
24-year-old Abdullah Khadr,
who sits in a Canadian jail
awaiting a February hearing on whether he will be
extradited to face terrorism-related charges, a judge
said yesterday.
In providing written reasons for denying Khadr bail last
month, Ontario Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy said
he is both a flight risk and a risk to public safety. Should
Khadr disappear suddenly, "the consequences
could be horrific" and
"the Canadian justice system would decidedly be
brought into disrepute," she added.
The judge also had strong words for Khadr's grandmother,
who was to act as his surety with a pledge of $250,000
to ensure his bail release.
Fatmah Elsamnah "is not a person who can be trusted"
because she testified she hadn't heard of her grandson
having admitted to purchasing rocket launchers and
grenades for use against U.S. forces in Afghanistan
until she came to court in December.
An RCMP affidavit alleges that before being released
last year from a Pakistani jail, where he had been
detained without charge from Oct. 12, 2004, Khadr
told U.S. investigators he bought weapons for
Al Qaeda to use against Americans in Afghanistan.
Khadr says he was tortured in jail and the defence
presented that as evidence to support his case, as
well as the fact he isn't facing charges in Canada.
Molloy rejected those arguments, saying there is
ample other evidence of Khadr's connections to
Al Qaeda, including a 2004 television interview in
which he said he dreamed of becoming a martyr
for Islam.
Khadr attended an Al Qaeda training camp in the
mid-1990s and his father was an associate of
Osama bin Laden before being killed in a clash
with Pakistani forces in 2003. Khadr's brother,
Omar, is facing a military tribunal in Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba, on charges of murder and aiding Al
Qaeda.
