FEMA Sends Trailers For Homeless Wilma Victims
POSTED: 1:19 pm EST November 11, 2005
PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. --

Help is on the way for Broward County residents who lost
their homes to Hurricane Wilma.
Emergency housing trailers from the Federal Emergency

Management Agency are being set up in C.B. Smith Park
in Pembroke Pines. They will be used to house families
who have had nowhere to call home since Wilma struck
South Florida Oct. 24.
This is not the first time South Florida residents have

taken up residence in emergency housing trailers.
Hurricane Andrew victims stayed in trailers for up to
18 months after the storm struck in 1992.
Following the 2004 hurricanes, hundreds of people on

Florida's west coast were housed in trailers.
Some were still living in them during this hurricane season.
About nearly 60 trailers had already arrived at C.B.

Smith Park by noon Friday. More were expected to arrive
over the weekend.
The number of residents at the McNicol Middle School

shelter went up yesterday from 467 to 583, with dozens
of pre-Wilma homeless scattered among hurricane victims.
But the school district told the Red Cross they must leave

within two weeks -- though county officials said they doubt
the deadline can be met. And many are complaining about a
slow response from FEMA on housing requests.
County officials said they were attempting to persuade

FEMA to allow them to use the money that is being spent
to run McNicol to pay for a block of hotel rooms and
apartment units.
