Globe and Mail Update
Ottawa pledged another $15-million in aid to
Afghanistan Thursday, with the cash earmarked
for rebuilding rural irrigation systems in the
war-torn nation…
He said Thursday's promise will help Afghanistan
rebuild rural irrigation systems damaged by years
of conflict and neglect.
“For centuries, Afghans have used traditional
irrigation methods to grow their food,” he said.
“Up to 80 per cent of agriculture production is
dependent on irrigation and over half of the
Afghan economy is dependent on agriculture.
“Through Canada's contribution, a certain number
of irrigation systems will be rebuilt, and this will
stimulate food production and help local
agriculture to grow other things other than
poppies for opium which is converted into
illegal drugs.”
I support Mr Harpers plan to help Afganistan's
infrastructure if they agree to stop destroying it.
