Soldiers in danger ?
Groups fear published cartoons put Canadians in harm's way

The irresponsible actions of a Calgary magazine publisher
have made Canadian troops in Afghanistan potential
targets for extreme Islamic fundamentalists, a national
group said yesterday.
The Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations
charged that by publishing cartoons that have resulted
in fatal riots throughout the world and the burning of
European embassies, the Calgary-based magazine
Western Standard has made Canadian troops in
Afghanistan targets for extremists.
The sentiments were echoed by Calgary's
Syed Soharwardy, president of the Islamic Supreme
Council of Canada and founder of Muslims Against
Terrorism. "If this news is spread outside Canada ...
they can use this to justify attacks against our soldiers,"
Soharwardy said.
He said he will be today filing a formal complaint with
the Alberta Human Rights Commission against the
publishers of the Jewish Free Press and
Western Standard for reprinting the cartoons, alleging
they incite hate.
But freedom at home can't be traded off for freedom
abroad, said Western Standard publisher
Ezra Levant. "It's flawed logic to think that terrorists
are terrorists because of a cartoon ... they're terrorists
for other reasons and they don't need any new excuses,"
said Levant.
The Calgary Sun decided not to run the cartoons some
weeks ago and has stood by that initial decision, said
Sun Editor-in-Chief Chris Nelson.
"There were two reasons for that decision; first, the
cartoons in question are simply not very good, and
secondly, they are insulting," he said.
"There are many things which never make the paper,
for example some of the extreme testimony during
the Paul Bernardo trial or the more graphic photos
of fatal car accidents. Some people may call that
censorship. We prefer to think of it as tasteful
editing."
