Canada's Hughes wins 5,000m gold; Klassen gets fifth medal
Torino, Italy (Sports Network) -
Clara Hughes of Canada captured the gold medal in
women's 5,000-meter speedskating Saturday at the
Winter Olympics.
Teammate Cindy Klassen finished third to record her
fifth medal in Torino.
The victory by Hughes denied three-time defending
Olympic champion Claudia Pechstein a record-tying
fourth gold medal in the event.
Pechstein, however, did pick up the silver.
Hughes and Pechstein made up the final pair of the day.
Hughes covered the distance in six minutes, 59.07
seconds.
Pechstein was 1.01 seconds behind and Klassen
was .49 seconds further back.
The only American in the field, Catherine Raney,
finished in seventh place, more than five seconds off
the winning time.
Klassen has become the darling of this year's
Olympic speedskating events.
She won the gold in the 1,500 meters, silvers in
the 1,000 and team pursuit and an earlier bronze in
the 3,000.
