Visit of Jamaica’s Commissioner of Police Mr. Lucius Thomas
to the Jamaican Diaspora in Canada, January 20-24, 2006
Sisters and Brothers
We are going to start 2006 by getting to grips with one of our
homeland's major problems – Crime. In response to the crime
situation in Jamaica, on behalf of Jamaicans in Canada,
we have invited our homeland's Commissioner of Police,
Mr. Lucius Thomas to come and talk to us, and he has
consented to be here between January 20 and 24, 2006.
In an interview from Jamaica, Commissioner Thomas said:
“It is an immense pleasure to visit the Diaspora in Canada.
“I look forward to sharing with you the initiatives being
undertaken by the Jamaica Constabulary Force to combat
crime in Jamaica.
“Ï also look forward to listening to, and answering questions
on any concerns, that members of the Diaspora may
have about the situation in our native land,” the
Commissioner said.“I am truly looking forward to the visit.
”This is the tentative agenda for the visit, in which we are
partnered by Air Jamaica, the Jamaican-Canadian
Association, the Jamaican Foundation of Hamilton
and others.
On Friday, January 20, in conjunction with the Jamaica
Canadian Association and other partners in the Diaspora,
we will host a verandah style rap session with the
Commissioner at the Jamaican Canadian Association
on Arrow Road.
This will start at 7:30 p.m.
This is an open session, so spread the word.
This will be the opportunity for Jamaicans in the Diaspora
to ask the questions and give the suggestions pertaining
to crime in Jamaica.
On Saturday, we are going to the Diaspora in Hamilton, Ont.
There will be another public session, in conjunction with the
Jamaica Foundation (Hamilton).
This will start at 7:30 p.m. in the Anglican Church of the
Resurrection Hall, 425 Mohawk Road West (at Garth St),
in Hamilton, Ont.
We are looking for Jamaicans in all parts of Southern Ontario
to be there to put their questions and suggestions to the
Commissioner.
There will be refreshments and even a chance to do some
dancing afterward – again, a chance to interface with the
Commissioner on a more personal level.
Sunday, January 22, we head back to Toronto, when the
Commissioner will speak during the 11:00 a.m. service
at Revivaltime Tabernacle on Dufferin St.
This will be hosted by Rev. Dr. Audley James.
On Monday, the Commissioner will pay his courtesy calls
on Toronto's Police Chief and other officials and see
a demonstration of advanced police tactics and
equipment.
He departs on Tuesday, January 24.
Please spread the word about the visit.
Please come, and bring many.
Crime is in the view of many people, the greatest
obstacle to Jamaica’s advancement.
Come and bring your questions – and more importantly,
your suggestions for solutions, to the Commissioner.
He and his officers have a huge job.
They deserve our support
The Diaspora has to come to grips with the various ways
in which we can help Jamaica and we can only do that
with unity and co-operation.
Let us forget about what Jamaica can do for us and
concentrate now on what we can do for Jamaica.
Regardless of, our political stripe or our membership
in any organization, we must have a common goal –
the betterment of Jamaica.
Peace and love
