New Year's Day murders
Thursday January 5, 2006
The Richmond Police Department
continues to work around the
clock in their investigation into
the Harvey family murders, talking
with family, friends, and
associates of the Harveys,
according to a press statement.
They are also working to solve the murders of
Lewis Casper, and his daughter, Rocana. “
Our detectives are focused and driven to clear
these cases,” said Captain Norris Evans, who
oversees the Major Crimes Division for the
department. “They’re putting in many hours and
following up on each piece of information.”
The Harvey family –Bryan, 49; Kathryn, 39;
Stella, 9; and Ruby, 4 -
was found slain in their home at
812 W. 31st Street on New Year’s Day.
The Richmond Police Department has canvassed
the Woodland Heights neighborhood where the
family lived. They have placed fliers throughout
the neighborhood. Police have confirmed the
family was bound and their throats were cut.
Police are waiting for the cause of death from
the Medical Examiner’s Office. A tip line was
established. “So far we have received about
50 calls, and detectives follow up on each call,”
Evans said. “The flow of information has been
good. We’ve received an enormous amount of
useful information.”
“We’re piecing the information together,” he
added. “It can take some time to determine
what information is relevant to the case, so we
treat each piece of information as important.”
Detectives also are working with profilers from
the Virginia State Police and the FBI.
Detectives also have been working long hours
in the Casper investigation and have strong
leads. Lewis Casper, Jr., 51, and
Rocana Casper, 17 were shot and killed in their
home on the 2400 block of Terminal Road on
New Year's Day. Evans said, “We are reviewing
physical evidence collected at the scene.
The community also has provided us with
valuable information.” An additional $5,000
reward in each case is being offered for
information leading to the arrest of those
responsible for these murders.
