Two Thai fishermen arrested in Briton murder
Mon Jan 9, 2006 3:27 AM GMT
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Two Thai fishermen have

been arrested on suspicion of raping and killing a
British student on the Thai holiday island of Koh
Samui, police said on Monday.
Police said the two men, in their mid-20s,

confessed to killing 21-year-old Katherine Horton,
but one denied he had raped her.
"They were arrested around two o'clock this

morning and they both confessed they had killed
her," Police Major General Aswin Kwanmuang,
the chief investigator, told Reuters by telephone
from the island.
The suspects were flown to Bangkok's Police

Hospital for forensic tests before they were
charged formally in court later this week,
Aswin said. "We will charge them for conspiring
to kill and rape, which will have a maximum
penalty of death," Aswin said.
Horton was studying at Reading University.

Robert Smythe, the headmaster of Cardiff's
Llanishen High School where she had been a
pupil, described her as an "outstanding student".
Horton, who had been on holiday on Koh Samui

with friends and had been due to return home
this week, was found dead in the sea off a beach
on Samui last Monday.
