Pope Benedict urged people to unite

against terrorism, poverty, pandemics

and environmental destruction,
in his first Christmas Day address

from the Vatican.
He also called for a "new world order"

to correct economic and ethical imbalances,

and appealed for protection for people

suffering from
"tragic humanitarian crises"

in the Darfur region of
Sudan and elsewhere.
