Police are crediting an arrest in a west-end dismemberment

killing to a neighbour who contacted them after receiving an
"unacceptable explanation" from a man about his wife’s
disappearance.
Robert Wiszniowski, 50, has been charged with

second-degree murder in the killing of his common-law wife,
identified this morning as Rose Marie McGroarty, 46.
Wiszniowski will appear in Old City Hall court today.
Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux said this morning that residents of

Parkdale "can now breathe a sigh of relief" after weeks
of uncertainty.
The investigation began when a woman's leg was found in a

trash pile by a city employee at Etobicoke’s Bermondsey
Transfer Station on Nov. 10. Hours later, a torso was
discovered in a laneway in the Queen St. W. and Dufferin St.
area. It was quickly determined that the parts came from the
same deceased person, likely a woman in her 40s.
Initially, the only leads were an abdominal scar as a result of

hysterectomy, a tensor bandage on the right foot and an
Avon anklet found on the corpse’s left foot.
Police appealed to Parkdale residents to note any sudden

disappearances of neighbours. Recently, they began going
door-to-door in the neighbourhood, asking people if they
could examine the contents of their freezers and
refrigerators.
This morning, Det. Sgt. Giroux said a woman phoned police

after getting "an unacceptable explanation" from a neighbour
when she asked why his wife wasn't around anymore.
The woman lived in a building that hadn't yet been
canvassed by police. That tip led to an arrest.
Giroux thanked the woman at the news conference, but said

he wouldn't release her name.
Police arrested Wiszniowski yesterday. They also removed

a woman’s head from a Parkdale location.
Police are still seeking information about the suspect.

They say Wiszniowski has lived in Parkdale for years and had
been known to frequent the Regent Park area.
Giroux said he was arrested for a crime 20 years ago,
but wasn't known to police recently.
McGroarty's death has now been classified as Toronto's

75th homicide of the year.
Last year, there were 64 slayings.
A post-mortem will be held today.
