EUROPEAN BUREAU
HEMEL HEMPSTEAD, England
—More explosions are feared from a massive fuel depot
that erupted in flames, rocking this area north of
London, and continues to burn.
Late last night, 18 hours after the first explosions, more
than 100 firefighters were still waiting for the blaze to
burn off much of the fuel before trying to douse it with
foam. Officials estimate that the fire will burn at least
until this evening, London time.
About 2,000 people were evacuated shortly after the
Buncefield fuel depot — the fifth largest in Britain
— exploded into a raging inferno at 6 a.m. yesterday.
Massive balls of fire lit up the dawn sky and a plume
of thick, black smoke slowly stretched southeast to
London, 40 kilometres away.
Police said the blasts appeared to be accidental, though
they occurred just four days after an Al Qaeda
videotape appeared on the Internet calling for
attacks on facilities carrying oil "stolen" from
Muslims in the Middle East.
