Women More At Risk From Violence At Home
BANGKOK, Nov 24 (Bernama)
-- The first-ever World Health
Organisation (WHO) global study
conducted over 24,000 women
from 10 countries showed
women are more at risk from
violence at home than on the street.
It reveals that intimate partner violence is the most common
form of violence in woman's lives, much more so than assault
or rape by strangers or acquaintances.
Four of five interviewed said they were abused by their
partners...many accept it as part of their life.
TELL US SOMETHING WE DON'T KNOW!
The study was based on interviews with women from rural
and urban areas in Bangladesh, Brazil, Ethiopia, Japan,
Namibia, Peru, Samoa, Serbia and Montenegro, Thailand
and Tanzania.
Abuse thrives in all cultures and these women are just afraid
as their western counterparts.
"In all sites except urban Thailand and Japan, women who
experienced violence are significantly more likely to have
more children than other women," she said.
The saying Misery likes company comes to mind?
Despite such abuses, it remains hidden, said Jansen.
At least 20 per cent of women reporting violence in the study
had never told anyone before being interviewed as many
believed it was better to keep such abuses within the family
for the sake of family ties and children's future, she said.
We see this behaviour here in western culture too but this
action hurts the children more than leaving the abusive
relationship.
She also said the study findings confirmed that women
around the world are at significant risk of physical and
sexual violence from their partner.
Jansen said WHO had come out with 15 recommendations
based on the study, among them to change attitudes and
social norms that perpetuate abuse, training doctors and
nurses to identify victims, create awareness among the
public and educate children in school as well as making
it part of health programmes just like HIV.
