Man Gets 100 Years For Sexual Abuse
Teenage Boys Say They Have Trust Issues
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa --
Steven Sempek on Tuesday was convicted of seven
counts second-degree sexual abuse and sentenced to
a 100-year prison term.
The abuse happened seven years ago to a pair of
brothers who are now in their teens. The boys were
in court to hear the sentence, which they said they
hope will put them on the path to healing.
Sempek had befriended the teens' family.
One victim said he's been scared to go outside, fearful
that Sempek would be waiting for him.
The other said the abuse prevented him from going
out for sports in high school. He said he's fearful of
being in a bathroom with another man.
Sempek had just finished serving five years in jail
for a similar crime.
Because of the earlier conviction,
Sempek's sentence was doubled and he will not be
eligible for parole for at least 70 years.
He begins serving the sentence immediately.
Prosecutors said they are considering more charges
in a separate case against Sempek.
