"The story of Josef Fritzl, the man WHO imprisoned his daughter in a cellar for

24 years and fathered her seven children, has been described as one of the worst

cases in Austria's criminal history.

Mr Fritzl, aged 73, emerges as a man who in public appeared to be a respectable

member of the community, living in Amstetten with his wife Rosemarie, with

whom he had seven grown-up children.

But DNA tests have confirmed he had a second, secret family with his daughter

Elisabeth, whom police say he lured into a cellar, aged 18, in 1984 and raped

repeatedly.

She gave birth to seven children, three of whom he and Rosemarie adopted or

fostered. Three children remained in the cellar with their mother.

Police say Mr Fritzl has also confessed to burning the body of a seventh child

shortly after it died in infancy. "

This story brought tears to my eyes and even posting it was so tramatic

I had to wait. I am not posting his picture because I dont want to ever

see his face again. Like his daughter I feel such a repulsion that makes

me imagine I am the one he has violated. The children whose lives he

has ruined to satisy his cravings will never be the same. I imagine

Elizabeth praying for help in those first few months and years and I

know the wait was long. She never gave up hope.......and in this last

attempt she succeeded.

I give Elizabeth his daughter the highest award for managing to

survive this ordeal and I can almost imagine the strenth she is going

to have to pull together to hold her family together. She protected

her children the best way she could have in her circumstances. I

have faith that they will overcome this horrid experience and hope

the media will let them be. I however do wish to know the fate of

Kersten who I have prayed for since April. I look everyday for hopeful

news and I am putting my hopes in the doctors who I feel will do

their best for this young girl who needs their help. The world is a

beautiful place at times and I hope they will have many good times

that will eventually erase their horrors. Yes they will need to change

their names and I hope everyone who is praying for this family

never stops.

Mexico is proving a deadly vacation spot for Canadians

Twenty years ago the only warning Canadians heard before travelling to
Mexico was “beware of Montezuma’s Revenge,” a colloquial reference
to the unhappy consequences of eating food that isn’t properly washed.
Today, Canadians travelling to Mexico appear to need instructions on
how to navigate hotel balconies.
In less than a year, three Canadians have apparently fallen to their
deaths from hotel balconies in Mexico. The latest Canadian tourist to
die in Mexico is Josh Iwasiuk, a 19-year-old from Selkirk, Man. who
according to Mexican officials fell to his death on the weekend from
the 10th floor balcony at the Puerto Vallarta resort where he and his
brother were vacationing.
Mr. Iwasiuk’s death follows the November, 2007, death of an Alberta
man, Christopher Morin, who died at a Cancun resort having, said
Mexican officials, fallen from a fourth floor balcony.

In May, 2007, another Alberta man, Jeff Toews, lost his life at a Cancun
resort where he too apparently fell to his death from his balcony.

In the case of the most recent incident
involving Mr. Iwasiuk, Mexican officials say
he somehow fell over a chest-high balcony
......... railing 10 storeys up but only sustained blunt force trauma to the
back of his head. While I am not a CSI expert, a 10 storey fall typically
generates broken bones and multiple fractures.
Local police and Mr. Morin’s family members suspected he was pushed
off the balcony he fell from in November, while the family of Mr. Toews
have reason to believe that he died of a beating rather than a balconey fall.
In addition to these deaths are two more disturbing incidents.
In January, 2007, an Ontario man, Adam DePrisco, died under suspicious
circumstances in the Mexican resort town of Acapulco, where officials said
he was the victim of a hit and run, despite the man’s family having
established reason to believe he had been beaten by security at a night club.
And there is the still unsolved murder case of Domenic and Nancy Ianiero
who were killed in their hotel near Cancun in February, 2006.
Mexican officials responded to their murder by first accusing two innocent
Canadian women from North Bay, Ont. vacationing at the same hotel, despite
having no evidence whatsoever. And later absurdly suggested the death of the
Ianieros was mafia related, because the elderly couple were Canadians of
Italian decent.
Six Canadian tourists have died in Mexico in less than two years.
In each incident Mexican officials have been quick to blame tourists
themselves, dismissing evidence to the contrary and downplaying the
possibility that Canadian tourists were targeted by criminals in Mexico.
Canadians should respond by calling on our government to use all diplomatic
channels to ensure full investigations are pursued in each of these deaths.
In the meantime, Canadians will find hotel balconies in Orlando and
West Palm much safer places to enjoy the sun and sea air.

Two More Canadians Shot In Mexico

A chain of troubling incidents involving Canadians in Mexico had a new link Sunday,
after reports two more Ontario residents were shot in an Acapulco hotel Saturday
night.
The pair - a man and a woman identified as 55-year-old Rita Calara and 73-year-old
Yoyo Manela - was at the Casa Inn Hotel (pictured) when a gunman reportedly
fired into the lobby. They were originally reported to be from Woodbridge but it
now seems they actually came from Niagara Falls and Welland.
They apparently weren't travelling together, but were both in the wrong place at
the wrong time. Both victims were shot in the leg and their injuries were non-life
threatening, which is good news considering a recent string of tragedies befalling
Canadians vacationing in Mexico.

Mexico has rejected a request from Canada to release
Brenda Martin, the Canadian woman imprisoned without
trial for more than two years.
In an interview last night, Ms. Martin said she was told by
Jason Kenney, parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister
Stephen Harper, that the Mexicans have insisted she go through
a criminal trial in no less than 30 days.
Mr. Harper dispatched Mr. Kenney to Mexico earlier this week
to meet with top Mexican justice officials in an attempt to gain
the release of Ms. Martin, who is physically weak and suicidal.
But Ms. Martin said Mr. Kenney and the Canadian government
have been ineffectual.
"I think they have done nothing, basically," she said.
Ms. Martin said Mr. Kenney tried to portray his efforts as progress
because the Mexicans agreed to rule on her case in 30 days instead
of the usual 60.
"Thirty days in Mexico is not 30 days. (My) defence has to be filed
first.
It could be two months or three months, who knows, and I am
way past being able to do that time. I don't know what they expect.
"I don't understand why my case is such a big to-do," she said.
"I was the chef for Alyn Waage."
Ms. Martin, now 51, is accused of helping her former employer, Alyn
Waage of Edmonton, defraud 15,000 victims around the world of
US$60-million through an Internet investment scam.
Ms. Martin has maintained her innocence. Waage is serving a 10-year
sentence in a United States prison. He has sworn an affidavit saying
Ms. Martin, his chef and house manager, was not involved in the scheme.
Mr. Kenney could not be reached last night to confirm Ms. Martin's
recollection of what she was told in their meeting. He said this week
it would be unrealistic to expect a quick resolution to her predicament.
Mr. Harper suggested yesterday that neither he nor
Mexican President Felipe Calderon can intervene in the judicial
systems of their respective countries.
"If the president of Mexico called me and demanded I release a
Mexican national, I would not be in the position to do that," Mr. Harper
told reporters in London, Ont.
"We have an independent judicial system," he said.
Mr. Harper said yesterday the judicial process "is unacceptably slow" and
he recently requested a "full review" of Ms. Martin's file.
He said Mexican government officials "at the highest levels" are aware
of Canada's concern about her case.
"At the same time, and I'm not trying to make excuses here, I'm just
trying to say if a foreign leader called me and asked me to end a judicial
process against a citizen, I would be in no position to do that," he said.
"I don't have that kind of authority, our judicial system is independent
in this country, and notwithstanding our concerns about processes in
Mexico, those systems are independent in Mexico as well."

Harper calls Mexican president to discuss case of jailed Brenda Martin

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made a personal
intervention on behalf of a suicidally depressed woman locked up

in a Mexican prison.
The prime minister called his Mexican counterpart Felipe Calderon

to discuss the case of Brenda Martin. He informed the Mexican

president
that he will send his minister responsible for multiculturalism,
Jason Kenney, to visit the Ontario woman in a Guadalajara prison.
Kenney and Ontario MP Rick Norlock will be the first members of the
Harper government to meet with Martin. Former prime minister
Paul Martin and Liberal MP Dan McTeague have already visited her.
"They intend to check up on her health, let her know that officials at the
highest level are focused on her case, and ensure that any immediate
needs are being taken care of," said one government source.
"They also intend to continue the process of raising her case with
Mexican officials to underscore how serious Canada takes it."
Kenney is expected to leave for a two-day visit to Mexico on
Tuesday, a government source told The Canadian Press.
A spokesman for Harper refused to discuss the prime minister's

phone call with Calderon, although he did not deny that the

conversation took place.
"In two years we have had over 100 contacts with Ms. Martin and
continue to raise her case up to and including the president of

Mexico," said Harper spokesman Dimitri Soudas.
He noted that Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier also

discussed the case Monday with his Mexican counterpart during

a trip to Washington.
Bernier said he received assurances that Martin's lawyers will be
able to talk with the country's deputy attorney general.
Mexican officials, meantime, said the case "is to be concluded
shortly," according to official reports.
Martin has been in prison for more than two years without a trial

on allegations involving a massive investment scam, says she's

innocent and has threatened to kill herself if she's not released.
But Mexico is blaming Martin's own lawyers for her lengthy stay,

saying they didn't separate her case from others accused of fraud

despite having the legal ability to do it.
"In not doing so, she remained linked to them and included in the
global file comprising 25,000 pages," said the embassy statement.
It noted Martin was working illegally in Mexico when she was

arrested but was never charged for that.
Martin, 51, denies any involvement in a $60-million pyramid
investment scheme that scammed about 15,000 people in dozens

of countries.
Her former boss Alyn Waage, who was convicted in the case, also
says Martin wasn't involved.
She was employed as a chef for Waage in Puerto Vallarta for 10
months in 2001. Waage was operating the Internet fraud scheme at
the time.
Martin wasn't charged until five years after the arrest of Waage,
who has provided a sworn affidavit saying she didn't know anything
about what he was doing.
She is facing counts of money laundering and being part of a
criminal conspiracy.

Kenney, the Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Canadian

The Save Brenda Fund is organizing a public rally in Ottawa to

raise public awareness of the plight of jailed Canadian

Brenda Martin.
Ms. Martin, 51, has been held in a Mexican jail for more than

two years, charged
with money laundering and being part of a criminal organization.
She has not been tried and convicted.
A recent constitutional challenge launched by Ms. Martin's
lawyer, Guillermo Cruz Rico, claiming her rights had been

denied, was unsuccessful.
Hundreds have already confirmed their attendance at the 2 p.m.

event scheduled for Parliament Hill on March 29, says co-organizer
Peter Cleary, a former Cobourg resident. Smaller rallies are being
organized in London, Toronto and Halifax, he added.

The Underwater Search Crew Heads Home,,,

The crew of the "Persistence" left Louisiana in November...headed to Aruba.

They've been using sonar and underwater robots to search Aruba's ocean

floor for Natalee Holloway since mid -December.
It's been an expensive process - a search like this costs about $50,000 a day,

according to search supervisor Tim Trahan. After three months of searching -

the search party is simply out of money, but they're not out of places to look

for Natalee. Trahan says the crew has used sonar to photograph almost 1000

miles of Aruba's ocean floor. Underwater robots have dove down and inspected

hundreds of suspicious objects. The crew still has 150 objects left to inspect.
The "Persistence" is due home around Wednesday, but the crew says their

search isn't over - just delayed. They'll now concentrate on looking for

money and trying to work their way back to Aruba and what they hope

will be answers.

Persistance is the key word here...

Supporters of a Canadian woman imprisoned in Mexico for more than

two years without trial are calling on Prime Minister Stephen Harper

to intervene in her case.
Numerous attempts by Helena Guergis, Canada's secretary of state

for consular affairs, to force Mexican authorities to expedite the case

of Brenda Martin have so far produced no results.

As her case has dragged on with no apparent end in sight,

Martin's mental state has deteriorated. On Sunday, Martin, who is

suicidal, was moved to a prison hospital in Guadalajara and

placed under 24-hour guard.
"Clearly the efforts made by Helena Guergis have been ineffective," said

Deb Tieleman, a childhood friend of Martin's who has led the public

campaign to win her freedom.

Danish youths riot for 7th night, several arrested

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) -
Bands of youths set fire to cars, buses and schools in Denmark on
Saturday, the seventh night of rioting and vandalism in the capital
Copenhagen and other Danish cities, police said on Sunday.
Four youths were arrested in the capital for suspected arson and
at least 24 fires were reported across the country. Several youths
were detained in Denmark's second city Aarhus in Jutland, and in
Odense on Funen island.
"It is some of the same groups that have roamed the city for the
last couple of nights," police operations leader Preben Jorgensen
told Reuters while inspecting fire damage at Tingbjerg School in
the outskirts of Copenhagen.
Hundreds of cars and a number of schools have been vandalised
or burned in the past week. Police could give no reason, but said
unusually mild weather and the closure of schools for a winter break
might have contributed.

Authorities have arrested dozens of youths,
predominantly with immigrant backgrounds.

But the eight-month-old child, abandoned in a parking garage stairwell Jan. 30, still has had no one come forward to claim or identify her.
Next month, the Children's Aid Society will go to court to start her adoption process.

"You would hope to think that someone would recognize her,'' said Moxley.

"We're using Facebook (and) YouTube to put this picture out.

If she is not from here then maybe somebody in the United States

will recognize her.''
Persaud, meanwhile, said the CAS expects to make an application

to the courts in March to have Angelica-Leslie ``legally freed'' for

adoption, which will require the baby to temporarily become a Crown ward.
Persaud said the baby's biological family would then have 30 days

Court doubts truth of Holloway "confession"

Law court officials on Aruba have decided not to re-arrest their

main suspect Joran van der Sloot in connection with the disappearance

of Natalee Holloway. The court has doubts about the truth of

Mr Van der Sloot's hidden-camera account of what happened on

the night Ms Holloway went missing. They also suspect that he

may have a personality disorder.Since the Dutchman has already

been released from custody twice in the course of the

investigation, the officials say there has to be compelling evidence

for detaining him a third time. In their view, the admissions filmed

by crime reporter Peter R. de Vries and his team do not constitute

sufficient grounds.

Mr De Vries has responded to the news with disbelief.

He says that by taking this decision, the Antillian authorities are

effectively rewarding Joran van der Sloot for sabotaging the

police investigation. The crime reporter argues that the suspect's

repeated lies to those investigating Ms Holloway's disappearance

should in themselves be reason enough to detain him.
