EDMONTON -- For committing the "most reprehensible and
extreme form of domestic violence" Michael White was
yesterday given life in prison with no chance of parole for
17 years.
The 29-year-old former soldier kept his head down as
Court of Queen's Bench Justice Mary Moreau passed sentence
on him.
"Mr. White committed the ultimate act of spousal abuse,
while occupying a position of trust," said Moreau, listing
off the aggravating factors in the July 12, 2005, slaying.
"Liana White was four months' pregnant," said Moreau.
"He has deprived his young and vulnerable child of her
mother," said Moreau, referring to the White's five-year-old
daughter Ashley, who likely saw the attack.
"The crime was brutal and callous, with signs of struggle
evident on the body by way of defensive wounds.
"Mr. White left the body without dignity in death, stripped
naked in a ditch.
"Mr. White attempted to cover up his crime."
The judge also noted a victim impact statement describing
Ashley as bereft and traumatized by the loss of her mother.
