STAFF REPORTER
The long-awaited murder trial of a Chinese visa student
accused of killing nine-year-old Cecilia Zhang was
suddenly adjourned today.
After returning from a closed-door meeting with
Justice Bruce Durno, Peel crown attorney
Mark Saltmarsh asked that the trial be adjourned until
May 9.
No reason for the adjournment was given either
inside or outside the Brampton courtroom.
Min Chen, 23, waited patiently in the prisoner's
box as Saltmarsh and fellow crown prosecutors
Steve Sherriff and Brian McGuire along with
defence lawyers John Rosen and John Lee
went behind doors for their unexpected meeting.
Chen is charged with first-degree murder in the
Oct. 20, 2003 abduction and slaying of the Toronto
schoolgirl.
The Grade 4 student was abducted from her bedroom
in her Whitehorn Crescent home in the early hours
of that morning.
Her remains were discovered five months later in a
dry riverbed near the Credit River in Misssissauga.
Chen, a former Seneca College student, was arrested
July 21, 2004.
