MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica —
Fire has claimed at least one life on board a cruise
ship in the Caribbean today.
Company officials say the blaze, which spread to
several cabins before being extinguished by crew
members, also injured 11 others.
The Star Princess docked at about 11:30 this
morning in the Jamaica port city of Montego Bay,
where rescue personnel quickly boarded the
vessel.
No smoke was visible coming from the ship, and
passengers remained on board.
The ship was en route from Grand Cayman to
Jamaica when the blaze started in a cabin,
according to a statement from Princess Cruises.
Carnival Chief Financial Officer Gerald Cahill
confirms the fatality and injuries and says at least
two of the injured were suffering from smoke
inhalation.
Carnival owns Princess Cruises.
The Jamaica Tourist Board is arranging for the
passengers to stay in Montego Bay hotels.
There are nearly 27-hundred passengers and
11-hundred crew on aboard.
