Remembering Rebecca

Like Natalee Holloway’s apparent
murder in Aruba this year,
17-year-old Becky’s murder in 1996,
when she visited Bermuda with her
friend Jasmine Meens, is likely to make people
think twice about safety of travel overseas for
young people. Also, these cases, and others
like them, point out the differences, not only in
laws, but in attitudes that lead to definitions of justice.
In Becky’s case, one of the accused murderers,
Kirk Mundy, secured a deal to testify against his
accomplice, Justis Smith, in return for being charged
only as an accomplice.
The result was judicial failure that caused international
shock. The evidence was there. The dying child, whom
passersby had found almost naked in the middle of an
isolated road, had been stabbed and cut 35 times,
beaten, tortured, raped, sodomized and murdered.
Pressure is still needed on the burmuda government
to charge the Kirk Mundy, and Justis Smith with
kidnapping and rape charges since the murder
charge cannot be retried.
