I for one wish them the best. Though they were initially thought to be a one-time novelty act, the Jamaican bobsled team has continued to press on through the years. GOOD LUCK GUYS!!!!!!

PRIME SUSPECT

In a development that brings fresh hope of solving the Natalee Holloway

mystery, a new witness has placed chief suspect Joran van der Sloot

near the scene of her disappearance at a crucial moment in the case.

And the witness has passed a polygraph test, The ENQUIRER has

learned exclusively.

There’s also a second new witness – an ex-girlfriend of Joran’s – who

claims that the wealthy lawyer’s son confessed, then threatened her on

the same beach where he was last seen with Natalee.

That’s the intriguing evidence behind Aruba prosecutor Hans Mos’ recent

stunning announcement that he may be close to rearresting van der Sloot,

The ENQUIRER has learned.

Eighteen-year-old Natalee vanished in May 2005 during a graduation trip to the

island with fellow seniors from Mountain Brook High School in Alabama

Joran, then 17, has admitted that he was the last person to see her – but claims he

left her alive after making out with her on the beach.

The new witness has told police that he was awakened by barking dogs at 4 a.m.,

and from his living room window near the beach saw

Joran running past.

The teenager was coming from the direction of a tidal pond, his clothes were

soaked and he was wearing only one shoe as he ran toward a

McDonald’s restaurant, the witness said.

“It’s highly significant because Joran told police that he left Natalee at

2:30 a.m. and got a ride home from one of his pals,” former U.S. Secret Service

agent Art Wood, who investigated the case and helped Natalee’s family, told

"Canada's manufacturing sector continued to bear the brunt of the
economy's job losses last month as the automotive industry scaled
back production in response to feeble consumer demand.
In manufacturing, 101,000 net positions evaporated in January, the
largest monthly decline on record for the sector, according to
Statistics Canada. About 36,000 of those positions were in Ontario,
where a slew of recent layoff announcements started to take effect.
"We'd all heard the very negative news over what was happening in
the auto sector and the rest of manufacturing, and the jobs data are
catching up with that reality," said Avery Shenfeld, a senior economist
at CIBC World Markets."

Gonorrhea 'superbug' comes to Canada

Gonorrhea superbugs are swiftly emerging in Canada, and men,

as well as patients over 30 are at the greatest risk,

new research shows.

This very interesting article tells us if left untreated gonorrhea can lead to

pelvic inflammatory disease and scarring of the fallopian tubes, causing

infertility in women. Inflammation of the prostate and urethra for men.

This sexually transmitted infection can cause serious bloodstream and

joint infections, as well as immune complications.

SYMPTOMS:

A painful or burning sensation with urination and penile or vaginal

discharge. But the new strain may not even show that.

FACTS:

In 2006, 28 per cent of gonorrhea infections in Ontario were resistant

to a potent class of antibiotics known as quinolones, up from four per cent

in 2002, according to a study in this week's issue of the

Canadian Medical Association Journal.

Gonorrhea is the second-most commonly reported sexually transmitted

infection in Canada, behind chlamydia.

Current Canadian doctors recommend quinolones — A drug

that is widely used to treat other infections, such as pneumonia,

and include the drug ciprofloxacin, or Cipro — They experts are now

recommending that it not be used for first-line treatment of gonorrhea

and that doctors switch to another drug class instead.

Recommendations for cephalosporins use instead of

qunds using inolones for gonorrhea. Were suggested, but doctors in Japan

and other countries are seeing resistance to cephalosporins.

Canadians doctors prefer quinolones because they're easy to take, safe

and tolerable.

According to Richardson Gonorrhea is targeting men and women

over 30-it appears they indulge in behaviour that puts them at higher

risk,"It's possible men have more frequent partners with people at higher

isk ofcarrying the organisms, such as sex-trade workers or men who have

sex with men.

"People should be concerned about their own personal risk," he says.

"They should take the appropriate precautions, they should always use

condomsfor the prevention of sexually transmitted infections with new

partners, andpreferably longer term."

Even if a person has been recently screened forgonorrhea and is negative,

"he or she may be carrying another STI that can't be

routinely tested for,"

As Christopher Paul Neil prepares to go to trial Monday in Bangkok on charges

of sexually abusing two boys in Thailand, his brother in Maple Ridge, B.C. is

offering emotional support.
"We're not going to abandon him," Matthew Neil said Sunday.
"He's still our brother and we'd like to see him come back at some point, whether

to face charges here or (not).

"We send him letters saying, no matter what the outcome is, be patient."
Christopher Neil, 33, is facing a 20-year prison sentence if he is convicted.

The boys, aged nine and 14 at the time, claim he paid them for oral sex.
The former Maple Ridge resident was arrested in rural Thailand in October

following a global manhunt. He has pleaded not guilty to four charges of

molesting and distributing pornographic images of the two Thai boys.

Elizabeth Fritzl- A mother first

"The story of Josef Fritzl, the man WHO imprisoned his daughter in a cellar for

24 years and fathered her seven children, has been described as one of the worst

cases in Austria's criminal history.

Mr Fritzl, aged 73, emerges as a man who in public appeared to be a respectable

member of the community, living in Amstetten with his wife Rosemarie, with

whom he had seven grown-up children.

But DNA tests have confirmed he had a second, secret family with his daughter

Elisabeth, whom police say he lured into a cellar, aged 18, in 1984 and raped

repeatedly.

She gave birth to seven children, three of whom he and Rosemarie adopted or

fostered. Three children remained in the cellar with their mother.

Police say Mr Fritzl has also confessed to burning the body of a seventh child

shortly after it died in infancy. "

This story brought tears to my eyes and even posting it was so tramatic

I had to wait. I am not posting his picture because I dont want to ever

see his face again. Like his daughter I feel such a repulsion that makes

me imagine I am the one he has violated. The children whose lives he

has ruined to satisy his cravings will never be the same. I imagine

Elizabeth praying for help in those first few months and years and I

know the wait was long. She never gave up hope.......and in this last

attempt she succeeded.

I give Elizabeth his daughter the highest award for managing to

survive this ordeal and I can almost imagine the strenth she is going

to have to pull together to hold her family together. She protected

her children the best way she could have in her circumstances. I

have faith that they will overcome this horrid experience and hope

the media will let them be. I however do wish to know the fate of

Kersten who I have prayed for since April. I look everyday for hopeful

news and I am putting my hopes in the doctors who I feel will do

their best for this young girl who needs their help. The world is a

beautiful place at times and I hope they will have many good times

that will eventually erase their horrors. Yes they will need to change

their names and I hope everyone who is praying for this family

never stops.

Mexico is proving a deadly vacation spot for Canadians
Posted: January 29, 2008, 1:28 PM by John Turley-Ewart

Twenty years ago the only warning Canadians heard before travelling to
Mexico was “beware of Montezuma’s Revenge,” a colloquial reference
to the unhappy consequences of eating food that isn’t properly washed.
Today, Canadians travelling to Mexico appear to need instructions on
how to navigate hotel balconies.
In less than a year, three Canadians have apparently fallen to their
deaths from hotel balconies in Mexico. The latest Canadian tourist to
die in Mexico is Josh Iwasiuk, a 19-year-old from Selkirk, Man. who
according to Mexican officials fell to his death on the weekend from
the 10th floor balcony at the Puerto Vallarta resort where he and his
brother were vacationing.
Mr. Iwasiuk’s death follows the November, 2007, death of an Alberta
man, Christopher Morin, who died at a Cancun resort having, said
Mexican officials, fallen from a fourth floor balcony.

In May, 2007, another Alberta man, Jeff Toews, lost his life at a Cancun
resort where he too apparently fell to his death from his balcony.

In the case of the most recent incident
involving Mr. Iwasiuk, Mexican officials say
he somehow fell over a chest-high balcony
......... railing 10 storeys up but only sustained blunt force trauma to the
back of his head. While I am not a CSI expert, a 10 storey fall typically
generates broken bones and multiple fractures.
Local police and Mr. Morin’s family members suspected he was pushed
off the balcony he fell from in November, while the family of Mr. Toews
have reason to believe that he died of a beating rather than a balconey fall.
In addition to these deaths are two more disturbing incidents.
In January, 2007, an Ontario man, Adam DePrisco, died under suspicious
circumstances in the Mexican resort town of Acapulco, where officials said
he was the victim of a hit and run, despite the man’s family having
established reason to believe he had been beaten by security at a night club.
And there is the still unsolved murder case of Domenic and Nancy Ianiero
who were killed in their hotel near Cancun in February, 2006.
Mexican officials responded to their murder by first accusing two innocent
Canadian women from North Bay, Ont. vacationing at the same hotel, despite
having no evidence whatsoever. And later absurdly suggested the death of the
Ianieros was mafia related, because the elderly couple were Canadians of
Italian decent.
Six Canadian tourists have died in Mexico in less than two years.
In each incident Mexican officials have been quick to blame tourists
themselves, dismissing evidence to the contrary and downplaying the
possibility that Canadian tourists were targeted by criminals in Mexico.
Canadians should respond by calling on our government to use all diplomatic
channels to ensure full investigations are pursued in each of these deaths.
In the meantime, Canadians will find hotel balconies in Orlando and
West Palm much safer places to enjoy the sun and sea air.

A chain of troubling incidents involving Canadians in Mexico had a new link Sunday,
after reports two more Ontario residents were shot in an Acapulco hotel Saturday
night.
The pair - a man and a woman identified as 55-year-old Rita Calara and 73-year-old
Yoyo Manela - was at the Casa Inn Hotel (pictured) when a gunman reportedly
fired into the lobby. They were originally reported to be from Woodbridge but it
now seems they actually came from Niagara Falls and Welland.
They apparently weren't travelling together, but were both in the wrong place at

Mexico has rejected a request from Canada to release
Brenda Martin, the Canadian woman imprisoned without
trial for more than two years.
In an interview last night, Ms. Martin said she was told by
Jason Kenney, parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister
Stephen Harper, that the Mexicans have insisted she go through
a criminal trial in no less than 30 days.
Mr. Harper dispatched Mr. Kenney to Mexico earlier this week
to meet with top Mexican justice officials in an attempt to gain
the release of Ms. Martin, who is physically weak and suicidal.
But Ms. Martin said Mr. Kenney and the Canadian government
have been ineffectual.
"I think they have done nothing, basically," she said.
Ms. Martin said Mr. Kenney tried to portray his efforts as progress
because the Mexicans agreed to rule on her case in 30 days instead
of the usual 60.
"Thirty days in Mexico is not 30 days. (My) defence has to be filed
first.
It could be two months or three months, who knows, and I am
way past being able to do that time. I don't know what they expect.
"I don't understand why my case is such a big to-do," she said.
"I was the chef for Alyn Waage."
Ms. Martin, now 51, is accused of helping her former employer, Alyn
Waage of Edmonton, defraud 15,000 victims around the world of
US$60-million through an Internet investment scam.
Ms. Martin has maintained her innocence. Waage is serving a 10-year
sentence in a United States prison. He has sworn an affidavit saying
Ms. Martin, his chef and house manager, was not involved in the scheme.
Mr. Kenney could not be reached last night to confirm Ms. Martin's
recollection of what she was told in their meeting. He said this week
it would be unrealistic to expect a quick resolution to her predicament.
Mr. Harper suggested yesterday that neither he nor
Mexican President Felipe Calderon can intervene in the judicial
systems of their respective countries.
"If the president of Mexico called me and demanded I release a
Mexican national, I would not be in the position to do that," Mr. Harper
told reporters in London, Ont.
"We have an independent judicial system," he said.
Mr. Harper said yesterday the judicial process "is unacceptably slow" and
he recently requested a "full review" of Ms. Martin's file.
He said Mexican government officials "at the highest levels" are aware
of Canada's concern about her case.
"At the same time, and I'm not trying to make excuses here, I'm just
trying to say if a foreign leader called me and asked me to end a judicial
process against a citizen, I would be in no position to do that," he said.
"I don't have that kind of authority, our judicial system is independent
in this country, and notwithstanding our concerns about processes in
Mexico, those systems are independent in Mexico as well."

intervention on behalf of a suicidally depressed woman locked up

in a Mexican prison.
The prime minister called his Mexican counterpart Felipe Calderon

to discuss the case of Brenda Martin. He informed the Mexican

president
that he will send his minister responsible for multiculturalism,
Jason Kenney, to visit the Ontario woman in a Guadalajara prison.
Kenney and Ontario MP Rick Norlock will be the first members of the
Harper government to meet with Martin. Former prime minister
Paul Martin and Liberal MP Dan McTeague have already visited her.
"They intend to check up on her health, let her know that officials at the
highest level are focused on her case, and ensure that any immediate
needs are being taken care of," said one government source.
"They also intend to continue the process of raising her case with
Mexican officials to underscore how serious Canada takes it."
Kenney is expected to leave for a two-day visit to Mexico on
Tuesday, a government source told The Canadian Press.
A spokesman for Harper refused to discuss the prime minister's

phone call with Calderon, although he did not deny that the

conversation took place.
"In two years we have had over 100 contacts with Ms. Martin and
continue to raise her case up to and including the president of

Mexico," said Harper spokesman Dimitri Soudas.
He noted that Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier also

discussed the case Monday with his Mexican counterpart during

a trip to Washington.
Bernier said he received assurances that Martin's lawyers will be
able to talk with the country's deputy attorney general.
Mexican officials, meantime, said the case "is to be concluded
shortly," according to official reports.
Martin has been in prison for more than two years without a trial

on allegations involving a massive investment scam, says she's

innocent and has threatened to kill herself if she's not released.
But Mexico is blaming Martin's own lawyers for her lengthy stay,

saying they didn't separate her case from others accused of fraud

despite having the legal ability to do it.
"In not doing so, she remained linked to them and included in the
global file comprising 25,000 pages," said the embassy statement.
It noted Martin was working illegally in Mexico when she was

arrested but was never charged for that.
Martin, 51, denies any involvement in a $60-million pyramid
investment scheme that scammed about 15,000 people in dozens

of countries.
Her former boss Alyn Waage, who was convicted in the case, also
says Martin wasn't involved.
She was employed as a chef for Waage in Puerto Vallarta for 10
months in 2001. Waage was operating the Internet fraud scheme at
the time.
Martin wasn't charged until five years after the arrest of Waage,
who has provided a sworn affidavit saying she didn't know anything
about what he was doing.
She is facing counts of money laundering and being part of a
criminal conspiracy.

event scheduled for Parliament Hill on March 29, says co-organizer
Peter Cleary, a former Cobourg resident. Smaller rallies are being

The crew of the "Persistence" left Louisiana in November...headed to Aruba.

They've been using sonar and underwater robots to search Aruba's ocean

floor for Natalee Holloway since mid -December.
It's been an expensive process - a search like this costs about $50,000 a day,

according to search supervisor Tim Trahan. After three months of searching -

the search party is simply out of money, but they're not out of places to look

for Natalee. Trahan says the crew has used sonar to photograph almost 1000

miles of Aruba's ocean floor. Underwater robots have dove down and inspected

hundreds of suspicious objects. The crew still has 150 objects left to inspect.
The "Persistence" is due home around Wednesday, but the crew says their

search isn't over - just delayed. They'll now concentrate on looking for

money and trying to work their way back to Aruba and what they hope

will be answers.

suicidal, was moved to a prison hospital in Guadalajara and

placed under 24-hour guard.
"Clearly the efforts made by Helena Guergis have been ineffective," said

Deb Tieleman, a childhood friend of Martin's who has led the public

campaign to win her freedom.

Bands of youths set fire to cars, buses and schools in Denmark on
Saturday, the seventh night of rioting and vandalism in the capital
Copenhagen and other Danish cities, police said on Sunday.
Four youths were arrested in the capital for suspected arson and
at least 24 fires were reported across the country. Several youths
were detained in Denmark's second city Aarhus in Jutland, and in
Odense on Funen island.
"It is some of the same groups that have roamed the city for the
last couple of nights," police operations leader Preben Jorgensen
told Reuters while inspecting fire damage at Tingbjerg School in
the outskirts of Copenhagen.

Law court officials on Aruba have decided not to re-arrest their

main suspect Joran van der Sloot in connection with the disappearance

of Natalee Holloway. The court has doubts about the truth of

Mr Van der Sloot's hidden-camera account of what happened on

the night Ms Holloway went missing. They also suspect that he

may have a personality disorder.Since the Dutchman has already

been released from custody twice in the course of the

investigation, the officials say there has to be compelling evidence

for detaining him a third time. In their view, the admissions filmed

by crime reporter Peter R. de Vries and his team do not constitute

sufficient grounds.

Mr De Vries has responded to the news with disbelief.

He says that by taking this decision, the Antillian authorities are

effectively rewarding Joran van der Sloot for sabotaging the

police investigation. The crime reporter argues that the suspect's

repeated lies to those investigating Ms Holloway's disappearance

should in themselves be reason enough to detain him.

Ottawa -- Canadian woman marks her second anniversary in a Mexican prison today. Mexican authorities jailed Brenda Martin two years ago for her alleged involvement in an investment scheme masterminded by her former boss, Alyn Waage.
Mr. Waage bilked thousands of investors of nearly $60-million (U.S.) and was sentenced in 2005 to 10 years in a U.S. federal prison.
But he has sworn an affidavit asserting Ms. Martin, who worked as his cook, knew nothing of the scheme.
Toronto lawyer Guillermo Cruz Rico appeared before a Mexican judge last month to argue for Ms. Martin's release from a Guadalajara jail.

Mr. Cruz alleges Mexican authorities violated her civil rights by not offering a translator at any stage of the police investigation or the legal process.

Bill O’Reilly: As you many know, the villain Joran van der Sloot, who we believe was directly involved in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway almost 2 years ago, was caught on an undercover tape saying the woman died in his presence and the body was thrown into the ocean.
Now, some believe the Aruban authorities have been covering up for van der Sloot. Joining us now from our New York studio, Geraldo Rivera. Do you believe that?
Geraldo: If don’t know if there’s cover up per se, but there certainly is no desire it seems to have this case aggressively pursued. You have, there’s rage, let me start that way Bill, there is real rage in Aruba, I’ve been on the phone with them all day today about the Appellate Court’s decision to support to lower Court Judge saying you can’t arrest him.
The reason the rage is so virulent is that they’re using as their rationale, that Joran van der Sloot, having told so many different stories, is now un-trustworthy when he confesses like he’s doing on the tape that’s being shown right now.
In other words, at first he says he and and the Kalpoe brothers drive her back to the Holiday Inn where they see a black, adult security guard making the moves toward her. Then he says the Kalpoe brothers did it, you know this guy has changed his story so often that the Judge now says he’s unreliable and you can’t trust his confession.
Bill O’Reilly: There’s no question the guy’s a pathological liar and a sociopath. You have to know that if you follow the case, but here’s the deal. I’ve watched this tape now, four or five times, the undercover tape by the Dutch journalist; there’s no way this guy’s making this stuff up; there’s no way this van der Sloot is making this stuff up.
Geraldo: That is why the local authorities, not the local authorities but certainly the local press and the people in the tourist business, because remember Aruba’s tourist trade is down between 12% and 18% since Natalee Holloway disappeared in 2005 so it’s having a real world impact on the Aruban people. Their rage is at the timidity of the judiciary, but the trouble is they have a tradition that once they arrest someone and release them, that the bar for evidence gets higher and higher.
Bill O’Reilly: Here’s what they could do and should do, just go in with it in front of a jury, let the jury have it and then if he walks, he walks. Let the folks decide and here’s the other wrinkle; this guy’s father is a big shot, this guy’s father has juice on that island, this guy van der Sloot was treated from the jump Geraldo, you know that.
Geraldo: Clearly, I believe that the father is the person that he called. Paulus van der Sloot is the person he called but let’s dissect what Joran tells Patrick.
If indeed the death of Natalee Holloway was an “accident” then the person you would call would be your dad, the Judge. It is natural if the death was an accident and not a murder that you’d call your dad and then he tells the cops later that Deepak and Satish did it. Deepak and Satish tell him in the back seat of the car and it’s on tape that ‘if they find that girl, you’re going to get 15 years’
Why didn’t they call the authorities if it was an accidental death and how could he sleep like a baby unless he knew that her body had been disposed of. To think that he would trust a casual friend with the disposal of dead Natalee Holloway and then go walk home and then sleep like a baby, defies human emotion, it is unconscionable.
Bill O’Reilly: You know me, I don’t speculate okay, but I’ll tell you right now why he didn’t call the authorities or the EMS if the woman had a seizure and died, because he raped her, because they slipped some date rate drug inside and any kind of an autopsy would have seen the date rape drug, this guy had history of doing this kind of stuff, we know he prowled the casinos.
You’ve been down there Geraldo, you know what goes on there. They target the tourists, they take the tipsy girls and they do this and any kind of an autopsy, any kind of a medical examination would have shown what these guys did to Natalee Holloway
Geraldo: And he is a big kid, he’s over 6 feet, he outweighs her 2 to 1. There’s no doubt in my mind not only did he drug her but he also roughed her up, maybe even to the point where he murdered her.
Bill O’Reilly: Okay, now.
Geraldo: But, we need some corroborating evidence because a confession without corroboration is a problem.
Bill O’Reilly: I say charge him and put him on trial and I’m not going to Aruba until they do. I hope everyone around the world watching me says no Aruba until the man gets in and gets on trial. Now, if the jury acquits him, OJ Simpson whatever, fine. Charge him, let the jury decide or no more Aruba and every decent person should feel the way that we do.

discovered on the concrete floor of a parking garage Wednesday

afternoon.

The girl, believed to be eight months old, was found by a passerby

in the frigid stairwell of a parking garage in a strip mall near

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — "A hidden-camera interview with a Dutch student saying he believed missing teenager Natalee Holloway was dead and asking a friend to dump her body at sea is admissible in court, the chief Aruban prosecutor said Monday.
The courts in Aruba will likely accept the tape as evidence because it was recorded by a private citizen without any influence by authorities, Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos told reporters.
"I take it very seriously," Mos said of the video.
The tape, which was first broadcast Sunday on Dutch television, has appeared to spur the investigation: Mos said authorities in the Netherlands searched two homes Monday where van der Sloot has lived while attending college there.
The prosecutor declined to provide any details about the searches."

On the 5th of Jan my stepdad Manuel Montross Nunez was buried.

He passed away the 27th of Dec after 10 years of cancer which was

deemed terminal last summer.

He chose the morphine patch so he could spend more time with his family,

in a better state. He had more good than bad days and was a very strong

individual who enjoyed poetry.

I stood in church wondering how we would have felt with no body to bury.

No reason or proof of death.

It was extreamly calming to hear the priest talk of his life after spending

a few hours with him administering last rites just a day before he died

in such a respectful and charming way.

My stepsister Natalee did a remarkable opening speech and left us with

tears in our eyes as she recited his favourite poem "In Flanders Fields ".

Autopsy shows teen died from 'neck compression'

A Mississauga, Ont. man charged with second-degree murder in the
death of his teenaged daughter showed little emotion during a court
appearance on Wednesday.

Muhammad Parvez, a 57-year-old cab driver, was ordered not to
communicate with his 26-year-old son Waqas, who is charged with
obstructing police during their investigation.
Dressed in an orange jumpsuit, Parvez mumbled "yes" when asked if
he understood the judge's order.
Parvez was remanded into custody until next month, when he will
apply for a bail hearing, his lawyer said.
Aqsa Parvez, 16, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries
on Monday after police said a man called 911 and said he had killed
his daughter. The teen succumbed to her injuries on Monday night.
An autopsy determined the cause of death to be "neck compression,"
according to a police press release issued late Wednesday afternoon.
Friends of the girl said she had been involved in a family dispute
over her choice not to wear a hijab, the traditional Muslim head scarf.
Police have not commented on a motive or how the girl was attacked.
A publication ban was imposed on details that came out in court on
Wednesday.
Two of Parvez's sons, along with a friend, attended the hearing.
Outside court, one brother said he didn't believe there had been a
culture clash, CTV's John Vennavally-Rao reported.
Sean Muhammed Parvez told reporters he wasn't sure what exactly
led to his sister's death.
"We don't know so far; we are upset," he said.
Parvez's lawyer, Joseph Ciraco, told reporters that the family is
distraught.
"It's clearly a tragedy," Ciraco said. "You've got a sister that's gone
and a father and brother in jail."
Ciraco said his client has a heart condition and will have to see a
doctor before his next court date.
Aqsa Parvez The victim, an Applewood Heights Secondary School
student, often complained of her situation at home, her friends
told CTV News on Tuesday.
The students said Parvez no longer wanted to wear a hijab, a
shoulder-length head scarf worn by some Muslim women.
They also said Parvez would often change her clothing once
she got to school and then would change back before going home.
"People said her brothers and sisters followed her to see if
she was wearing her headscarf or not," one student said.
Parvez had recently been staying with a friend because of tension
at home, classmates said.
"Her dad was threatening her and she was getting scared and she
just didn't want to live there anymore," another student said.
Parvez's death has again raised the issue of so-called honour killings.
'Honour killings'
The United Nations estimates at least 5,000 women a year are
killed for committing adultery, defying tradition, or for simply talking
to the wrong man and thereby bringing shame upon relatives.
Exact numbers are impossible to know because the majority of such
murders -- women are the main victims -- go unreported and the
guilty unpunished.
United Muslim Women of Canada's Anisa Ali said the public
shouldn't assume that honour killings only happen in the Muslim
community.
"It's not an Islamic practice," Ali told CTV's Canada AM on Wednesday.
"There's nowhere in the Qur'an where it talks about honour killings.
It's more of a cultural phenomenon."
She said honour killings are not limited to Islamic countries like
Pakistan, Jordan, Syria and Afghanistan.
"There's Latin American countries, it has taken place in
Germany, in Britain," she said. "A lot of it is under the guise of
family honour or religious values."

A Manitoba community is in shock after learning three young children
are responsible for the drowning of a 6-year-old boy.
"The investigation revealed that the child was in the company of three
youths, aged 7, 8 and 9," says a recording on the Manitoba RCMP's
media line.
"It was determined that the victim had been bullied into removing his
clothes and was then pushed into the lake by one of the youths.
The child was unable to swim and consequently drowned."
The boys are too young to be charged with criminal offences, say
police, adding the matter will be referred to the Southeast Tribal Child
and Family Services.
Adam Keeper's body was found Wednesday morning near the shore of a
lake on the Pauingassi First Nation, a reserve in northeast Manitoba.
Pauingassi Chief Harold Crow says the community is trying to deal with
the awful circumstances of Adam's death.
"He was a very, very nice little boy," Crow said, speaking for Adam's
father, Harvey Owen, who was too emotional to speak.
"He usually got along with the other kids ... He was always playing and
enjoying himself."
Crow said medical personnel tried to revive him without success.

Serial pedophile Peter Whitmore has reportedly written a request to prison officials that he be chemically castrated to help control his urges.

Whitmore pled guilty last Monday to 15 charges arising from events that began in July 2006 involving two boys.

The charges included three counts of sexual assault causing bodily harm, one kidnapping charge, one charge of abduction of a person under the age of 14 and one charge of unlawful confinement.

Now, after being sentenced to life in prison with the chance of parole in seven years, the Winnipeg Free Press is reporting that Whitmore has made the request for the procedure.

Chemical castration involves ingesting a cocktail of hormonal drugs that over time permanently eliminate a person's sex drive.

Whitmore's consent is necessary as Canadian criminals can't be ordered to have the treatment.

He had agreed to be chemically castrated back in 2005 following his release from jail.

But the procedure was never done because officials couldn't find a doctor who would accept Whitmore as a patient.

Whitmore's lawyer Dan Brodsky told the newspaper that hopefully his client has an easier time getting the procedure done this time.

The Crown offered Whitmore the recent plea deal to spare his latest victims from testifying.

It also spares Whitmore the dangerous offender designation, something reserved for those who have proven incapable of controlling violent or sexual impulses.

Whitmore's history

Whitmore was arrested last August after an exhaustive manhunt and 10-hour standoff at an abandoned farmhouse in Saskatchewan.

Both of the boys involved were returned safely to their families. But not long after Whitmore was arrested, the Crown said it would seek dangerous offender status.

Whitmore, who has been described by justice officials as someone who cannot be rehabilitated, has never been sentenced to more than six years before this.

In 1993, Whitmore served 16 months behind bars after an Ontario conviction for abduction and sexual offences involving four boys.

Just over a week after his release, he took an eight-year-old girl from Guelph, Ont., to Toronto and was sentenced to another 56 months in jail for the offences involving the girl.

He told CTV's Canada AM in October 2000, "I have control over what I do, and I'm not concerned I'm going to re-offend."

This is a partial transcript from "The O'Reilly Factor," July 19, 2007, that has been edited for clarity.

BILL O'REILLY, HOST: In the "Thursdays with Geraldo" segment tonight, "The Factor" has learned from sources we have to protect that Natalee Holloway, the 18-year-old Alabama woman who disappeared two years ago in Aruba, died from cardiac arrest brought on by an overdose of cocaine.

According to top law enforcement officials, Natalee ingested the cocaine with Jordan van der Sloot and one of the Kalpoe brothers. Her body was then disposed in the ocean. With us now, FOX News anchor Geraldo Rivera, who you can see Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m. in "The Factor" slot.

And I've got to give a viewer advisory here that this is information that "The Factor" has not been able to confirm independently because there is no body. But law enforcement officials believe that exactly what I said, that Natalee took a massive overdose of cocaine and when she died these boys disposed of her body.

Ever since American teenager Natalee Holloway disappeared on the island of Aruba during a high school post-graduation trip last year, police say they have done everything in their power to crack the case. But Natalee's mom, Beth Holloway Twitty, disagrees — and accuses Aruban authorities of being slow in their investigation.

Authorities now say they feel confident this case will be solved soon. Correspondent Troy Roberts gets an exclusive, inside look at the investigation and at new clues police are considering.

"They say a picture speaks a thousand words? This one speaks 2,000 words to me," says Gerold Dompig, Aruba's lead investigator in the Natalee Holloway case, as he looks at what may be the last picture taken of the teen.

The photo, shown publicly for the first time by 48 Hours, was discovered by the FBI in the camera of one of Natalee's classmates. For Dompig, the picture is a constant reminder of his toughest case.

Deputy Chief Dompig has been under a strict gag order since last year, but Aruban authorities agreed to let him speak exclusively to 48 Hours about the latest details of his investigation.

Asked how he would characterize the current state of the investigation, Dompig says, "I would say 'critical last phase.'"

"Do you believe this case will be solved?" Roberts asked.

"Yes, I do," Dompig replied.

The story of what happened to Natalee Holloway has been marked mostly by speculation and rumor but very few facts. But , for the first time, police allowed 48 Hours inside the police investigation in Aruba. Among the things 48 Hours has learned is what authorities believe really happened to the Alabama teenager the night she disappeared, as well as clues that could close the case once and for all.

"We have been informed by a manager of a nightclub that he received a call. He wanted to talk about the fact that he knew more about the whereabouts of Natalee," says Dompig, who acknowledges that this is the first valuable lead he's gotten in a while. "Yes, concerning a specific burial location, yes," he says.

Holloway disappeared last May, and for nearly a year, police have received dozens of leads, all leading nowhere. But Dompig is convinced that the person who made the call may be the key witness they’ve been waiting for.

"The information that this person gave was too specific to just be a story that was just made up by someone," explains Dompig.

Now, based on this new information, investigators will begin searching again for Natalee’s body on the northern tip of the island.

"Somewhere on the sand dunes that go all the way up behind the lighthouse … where we basically have to search," explains Dompig as he shows Roberts the general search area. "It’s worse than looking for a needle in a haystack."

Aruba, just a stone’s throw from the coast of Venezuela, plays host to more than a million visitors every year, most from the United States. In recent years, a younger and younger crowd has landed on its shores.

The senior trip to Aruba was a well-deserved vacation for Natalee. Days earlier, this honor student graduated from Mountain Brook High School, just outside Birmingham, Ala.

Three of her best friends, Liz Cain, Mallie Tucker and Claire Fierman, recall their last days with Natalee.

"It was so much fun. We would wake up, go like, brush your teeth, go straight to the beach. We would literally stay in the water all day long because it was so perfect," says Fierman. "We just hung out with our friends on this beautiful island. It was a really fun trip.”

On their last night, Cain says they went to Carlos'n Charlie's, a local nightspot.

The legal drinking age on Aruba is only 18, and even that is not strictly enforced, making the island a preferred vacation spot for American teenagers. No one disputes that Natalee and many of her classmates drank alcohol during their senior trip. But the authorities tell 48 Hours they have evidence that Natalee’s drinking got seriously out of control and may even have contributed to her death.

"She was, I think not differently from other students. She was having a great time and she was using … doing that," says Dompig. "Using way too much alcohol in combinations which could basically be lethal."

Natalee’s mother, Beth Holloway Twitty, has been working tirelessly since last May, trying to unravel the mystery of her daughter’s disappearance.

"You know she was 18 years old. She was on her senior trip. They were in this establishment of legal age," she says. "I'm certain they were drinking. We never even tried to say that they weren't, you know. But I have to ask myself, you know, 'Should that cost her life?' No. It shouldn't."

Police interviews with hotel staff, local bartenders, and her friends reveal that Natalee had spent much of the day with a drink in her hand.

"Do you know if Natalee could handle her alcohol?" Roberts asked.

"Yes," said Cain. "She was never somebody to be out of control if she had been drinking at all."

"When you hear stories, like people started drinking in mid-afternoon and drank through the night. Does that sound accurate?" Roberts asked.

"Yes," Claire Fierman said.

Fierman and Cain agreed that the drinking was kind of excessive.

48 Hours has learned that the Aruban investigation turned up another disturbing detail.

Asked if he has been able to confirm whether Natalee purchased or consumed illegal narcotics during her stay in Aruba, Dompig says, "We have statements claiming that she, that she had drugs."

What kind of drugs?

"I cannot say," Dompig replied.

Dompig notes that police don't have any proof that Natalee used drugs but "that they saw her with drugs in her possession."

Had Natalee’s friends heard stories of people taking drugs?

"No. The only thing I heard about drugs is there were like people at the hotel that weren't with us that would like offer stuff to people. I was never offered drugs and I never even saw 'em," said Fierman.

However, police do believe that Natalee’s judgment was impaired that night. Her friends were surprised that she was last seen willingly getting into a car with three strangers, 17-year-old Joran van der Sloot, 21-year-old Deepak Kalpoe and his brother, 18-year-old Satish Kalpoe.

Fierman says it would have been out of character for Natalee to voluntarily get into a car with three boys. "It frustrates me so much because I feel as much as, like, we say that, no one believes us 'cause you hear all that stuff," she says. "But, from the bottom of my heart, that is extremely out of character and not something that Natalee Holloway would ever do."

Holloway's mother agrees. "No way would she have left her friends and placed herself knowingly what she was getting into. They just took her when she just … There's no way."

"Do you think she may have been vulnerable because she had been drinking too much?" Roberts asked.

"Very much so," Cain replied.

Since Natalee disappeared almost 10 months ago, her mother has used any opportunity to keep the story alive to pressure the government of Aruba to solve this case.

"There are just no words to explain the frustration level that we have had to experience in dealing with officials from the island of Aruba," she says.

Last fall, Twitty called for a boycott of Aruba. The island’s tourism industry has suffered: Travel bookings are off more than 4 percent from a year ago.

Does she still support a boycott of Aruba?

"The only leverage that we have in getting any traction in the investigation is when they feel the effects of a boycott," says Twitty.

According to Deputy Chief Dompig, the boycott is not the only thing that has cost Aruba dearly. He says authorities have about $3 million, on this investigation. "Which is about 40 percent of our operational budget," he explains.

As far as Beth Twitty is concerned, there has always been a simple solution to solving this case: Just ask the people last seen with Natalee — Joran van der Sloot and Satish and Deepak Kalpoe.

"If they had just gotten the suspects within the first 48 hours like they were supposed to have done, then they wouldn't have spent anything," she says.

"They were focused already from the first day, from the get–go, on these three boys. So, it's hard for them to understand that when we investigate, we have to go systematically. We have to go back to basics. And we have to do it by the book," says Dompig. "We are within the Dutch kingdom. We have a judicial system. We have a court of law. And we have rules. So we had to follow the rules of the game."

The police apparently did just that. Contrary to the storm of criticism from the American media, the Aruban police say they quickly put van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers under surveillance.

Dompig says surveillance of the three boys began on the third day after Natalee was reported missing and included observation, telephone wire taps, and even monitoring of their e-mail.

“Bringing in the prime suspect is basically the last thing we do," Dompig explains. "When we bring you in, we probably already know the story because we have observed. We have talked to all your friends. We have checked your phone line. We have done everything that is technically possible to know about your whereabouts.”

But police say extreme pressure from the Holloway family forced them to stop their surveillance and make arrests. Just 10 days after Natalee disappeared, police took van der Sloot, the Kalpoe brothers, and later, even van der Sloot's father into custody.
Asked if pressure from the family compromised the investigation, Dompig says, "I think so. It at least distracted the investigators' efforts.”

Twitty says she was just trying to get the police to find her daughter.

"We wanted justice and we wanted the truth. And I think that that was shocking to the officials in Aruba that we were so persistent in our quest for that," she says.

Paulus van der Sloot was quickly released on judge’s orders, but the young men remained in custody.

Twitty says she is confident the three boys know what happened to Natalee.

But less than a month after their arrests, a court released Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. As police feared, simply questioning the brothers did not turn up enough evidence to charge them with a crime. To this day, they deny any involvement with Natalee’s disappearance.

Despite the setbacks, the cops were able to play hardball with their prime suspect, 17-year-old Joran van der Sloot, thought to be the last person who saw Natalee.

As Aruban law allows, authorities detained him for months without charging him with any crime.

Aruban lawyer Arlene Shipper — who often speaks on behalf of the Aruban government — was sure Joran would crack. "It's mind-boggling to us that a 17-year-old, if he would have done it could not have been broken. It's incredible."

But as Dompig explained, Joran’s age actually made things harder for the interrogators.

Dompig acknowledges Joran was afforded some special legal protections because he was 17 years old at the time of his arrest. Dompig says that did complicate matters. "Yes, that complicated matters seriously because he had more visiting rights with his father — his father being a judge in training was a problem for us because he could give his son certain advice."

Joran’s father discussed the family’s ordeal with CBS' The Early Show.

"We are telling the whole truth, nothing but the truth. And we spoke all this to Joran to tell the truth," Paulus van der Sloot said.

Police say they could not listen in on the conversations between Paulus and his son, citing that they were "privileged conversations."

Dompig says he believes Paulus van der Sloot does know more than he has been telling about the circumstances surrounding Holloway's disappearance.

But in spite of those parental visits, 48 Hours has learned that the interrogations were intense and tough. Special agents from the FBI were brought in, along with investigators from Holland to conduction the interrogations.

Dompig says while Joran van der Sloot wasn't subjected to questioning in the middle of the night, there were late sessions.

"So he was deprived of sleep but it wasn't going on for days?" Roberts asked.

"No," Dompig replied.

Dompig says it almost worked. “There were several moments where Joran almost broke. Several moments,” he says.

Dompig says Joran's basic story changed three times. "But the little facts changed over 25 times. So it was never the same."

One critical element of the interrogation remains in dispute: did Joran admit to having sex with Natalee?

Twitty claims that Joran was clear with the police about one thing — that he had sex with her daughter the night she disappeared.

"I had access to several statements, and in one of Joran's statements he's describing Natalie as she's falling asleep and waking up, falling asleep and waking up repeatedly. And, as she's doing this, he is explaining, he's very sexually explicit, graphically detailing what he is doing to Natalie. OK?" Twitty said.

Twitty and her attorney would not share those documents with 48 Hours. In spite of her claim, Dompig says there is no proof of sexual assault.

Asked if Joran van der Sloot ever confessed to being sexually intimate with Natalee, Dompig says he never did.

"Believe me, we were looking for anything to throw him, to keep him in jail," says Dompig. "The only thing he admitted to was that he was fondling [her] sexually, like kissing, touching her. And there was no sexual in terms of penetration or whatever, really having sex with her.”

After nearly two dozen lengthy interrogations, the police still had no confession and had found no body. So on Sep. 3, 2005, Joran van der Sloot was released to his parents.

"This young man, a 17-year-old-boy was able to withstand 90 days in prison, and undergo specialized interrogation, and they weren't able to get a confession from him," says attorney Arlene Shipper.

"What does that say ?" Roberts asks.

"It can mean two things — either he's innocent, he really doesn't know what happened, or he's a genius," she replied.

Joran van der Sloot has denied any wrongdoing, but he has done nothing to dispel Dompig’s suspicions.

Asked what FBI profilers told Dompig about van der Sloot's psychological profile, he says, "They use the word sociopath. And the fact that he was capable of lying about basically everything."

Twitty says there's a reason she thinks van der Sloot is lying — he is covering something up. "He's covering something up so horrible that he can't tell the truth," she says.

But if Joran can’t or won’t tell the whole story of what happened that night, police think they may soon find someone else who will.

"New people are coming in the picture," says Dompig. "It is possible that there was help. Or it is possible that there was a second group involved other than these three boys.”

With no major break in the Holloway case in the past six months, Aruban authorities are re-doubling their efforts to find Natalee’s body.

One of the most persistent theories clouding the case is the notion that her body was dumped out at sea.

But Dr. Ruben Cruz, the head of the island’s search and rescue team showed 48 Hours that an unweighted body thrown overboard near the shore would wash up on the beach.

Cruz says he and his team have tossed a dummy overboard many times, but that in every case, it drifted back to shore. The only way that wouldn’t happen is if a boat sailed more than two miles offshore — a trip that would have turned up on police radar and been captured on tape.

Police have accounted for every boat in the water the night Natalee vanished.

Authorities now believe that the teenager's body may be buried somewhere among some dunes, but not because it washed ashore. The Aruban authorities’ new theory is that someone, someone possibly very close to the young suspects, took the time to carefully hide the body, not once but maybe twice, literally re-burying her.

And there’s another stunning revelation from the authorities: Though they’re convinced Holloway is dead, they tell 48 Hours that they believe she was not murdered.

"This was a highly intoxicated body of a very small person," says Dompig.

Dompig laid out the latest scenario of what happened after Natalee was last seen driving off with van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers shortly after 1 a.m. He says investigators think the group did not go to the beach but that they possibly brought Natalie back to the van der Sloots' home.

Wherever she was, police now think that while Natalee was with Joran, she died suddenly from an overdose of intoxicants.

"We feel strongly that she probably went into shock or something happened to her system with all this alcohol maybe on top of that other drugs which either she took or they gave her and that she just collapsed," says Dompig.

The crime, Dompig suspects, occurred when the body was illegally disposed of. The boys may have acted alone.

"We’re not talking about killers here," he says.

Or, as Dompig reveals for the first time, they could have had accomplices. "New people are coming in the picture. It is possible that there was a second group involved, or more people than these three boys," he says.

Dompig speculates the body was hastily buried once, and that those extra accomplices may have been needed to move it to a more hidden location.

These latest developments, the new witness, the chance of an accidental death by overdose, and the possibility of additional accomplices re-locating the body, have changed Dompig’s view of the case.

"I'm convinced that there's no thing as a crime of this proportion, which goes unseen. There's the information on there. And we just have to get it," he says.

But the challenges are daunting: So far, there has not been a shred of forensic evidence found in the van der Sloot house, the Kalpoe car, or anywhere else on the island.

"It's very rarely that you have a case that somebody just disappears and there's hardly any evidence left behind," says Shipper.

Ten months after Natalee’s disappearance, Natalee’s home town of Mountain Brook, Alabama, is still starved for answers.

Natalee’s schoolmates have had to handle a harsh lesson about the dangers of the adult world they’ve entered.

"You know, we went on senior trip. But then after that, it was basically like we were forced to not become adults, but definitely grow up a lot," says Cain.

Natalee’s parents have filed a civil suit against Joran van der Sloot and his father, but Twitty knows she may never learn the truth about what happened to her daughter.

Asked what gives her hope today, she replied, "I don't have any."

"You don’t have any?" Roberts asked.

"If somebody wants to tell me ..." she tearfully replied.

But Dompig is optimistic that answers will be found. "We are that much closer to knowing what really happened to Natalee," he says. "A crime like this cannot go unsolved."

The death of a "promising young man" became a rallying point for a
neighbourhood overrun with gun violence yesterday, as more than
1,300 people gathered to pay respects to Jordan Manners, shot dead
in his high school little more than a week ago.
"If you met Jordan for two minutes, your face was full of smiles, two
minutes at the maximum," said Greg Stokes, Jordan's uncle, at the
Christian Centre Church, near the corner of Jane Street and Finch
Avenue. "He was a prince. And he could have been a king of change."
While grieving over the open casket of 15-year-old Jordan, his
mother, Laureen Small, fell backwards, fainting into the arms of
supporters who helped her to her chair. Ms. Small fought back
tears through the two and a half hour service as a pageant of
friends, family and former teachers took the stage to remember
the boy who they called a leader, an artist and a lover of the
outdoors.

It seems violence in school has become the norm all over.
How someone could feel that shooting someone would make
them a big person or ever fix whatever quarrel they may have
leaves me puzzeled. Why? is the question on everone lips and

Canada has no right to interfere in the case of a
Canadian Muslim activist sentenced this month to life in
prison in China for alleged terror links, China’s Foreign
Ministry said yesterday.
Huseyin Celil, whose wife and four children live in
Burlington, was convicted of the crimes of "separating China"
and "organizing, leading and participating in terrorist groups, organizations."
Canada has been lobbying for his release and the dispute
is expected to come up when Foreign Minister
Peter MacKay visits China, April 29 to May 1.
"We believe the case is China’s internal affair and in essence
relates to anti-terrorism," said Chinese Foreign Ministry
spokesman Liu Jianchao at a news briefing. "It has no
connection with Canada. We hope the Canadian side will
not interfere with China’s internal affairs under this pretext."
Celil’s wife, Kamila Telendibaeva, is asking the federal
government to do more to free him. She is urging

China. Celil was arrested in 1994 and tortured, but

and Turkey before reaching Canada, where he was
given citizenship.

TORONTO -- The social networking website Facebook does
not add value to a workplace environment and civil servants
should not be wasting office time visiting the site, Ontario
Premier Dalton McGuinty said yesterday.
The province this week quietly banned government staff
from accessing the popular website while at work, adding
Facebook to other prohibited online destinations such as
YouTube and gambling and hard-core sex sites.
McGuinty said he wants civil servants to be concentrating
on their jobs, not on Facebook or other non-business
websites.
"A number (of sites) have been rendered inaccessible in
the past," he said.
"I think Facebook is predominantly a social network. It
has its value, but we just don't really see how it adds value
to work that you do in the workplace."

One word describes my visit to a bingo hall last night. NUTS!!!

Its amazing, Its fascinating, Its hilarious and of course adventurous.

I bought the three column bingo card set and nearly died.

I was 2-3 numbers away from blotting at all times. My girlfrind

being more adventurous than me insisted we stay for the next

bingo and bought a 5 column bingo package, Amazingly she was

able to to keep up ex except the answer to my question of what

she needed to win was. "I dont know dont have time? How the

hell will she know if she won if she does not know what to look

for? there are all sorts of new names. eg: postage stamps, 9 sets

and a hard line. NI cant tell you what theses meant. DON'T ASK!!

Mourners focused on the passion and the joy Nick Brown
brought to everything he did as they laid to rest the 21-year-old
who was slain on the subway last week.
Brown would have wanted to be remembered in his own words,
his uncle Giuseppe Pileggi said during the solemn remembrance
yesterday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Scarborough.
"I am a unique young man," Pileggi said, reading from his
nephew's journal. "I see my future only if I choose to get
there. I want the best for my family, my friends and myself."
Brown wrote that he "touched people's souls" with his words
and that he worried he might never live up to the success
he dreamed about.
The young man worked as a night manager at a sub shop,
while spending his days in a plumbing co-op program
through Central Tech. He dreamed of owning a restaurant.
His plumbing instructor eulogized Brown as a hard-working
and focused student who was eager to work hard but ready to
help others, too.
"With all that he did Nick somehow managed to find time
to study and maintain an 80% average,"
Central Tech teacher Robert Schrader said. "Nick had a
passion and an energy that we all admired."
Of his future, Brown wrote: "I can't wait, for I am enjoying
the climb to my success."
Toronto Police believe Brown was on his way home April 13
when he was killed during an altercation on an eastbound
subway car as it entered Victoria Park station.
Brown was found at Kennedy station about 1:40 a.m. suffering
from multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 26-year-old Toronto man charged with second-degree
murder in Brown's death shivered yesterday in a Scarborough
courtroom as he made a brief appearance before a justice of the
peace.
John Paul Vallon, dressed in a short-sleeved orange jumpsuit,
only glanced towards the spectators in the courtroom, his hands
stuffed into his pockets.
There did not appear to be any friends or family in the
courtroom.
He then quietly complained to duty counsel Richard Sherman
that he was cold.
Vallon, who was arrested Thursday afternoon, returns to
court April 30 in a video remand.
Pileggi credited homicide investigators for their hard work
in securing the arrest, and said he would like to see more
security cameras around the city with higher resolution.
Police released a TTC video of a man leaving Victoria Park
station before the murder was discovered.
Brown's family felt some relief when police told them about
the arrest, Pileggi said. But they would still like witnesses to
go to police with any information they have.

"I am reaching out my hand, please come forward, we
need your help," Pileggi said.

A mentally ill man who disappeared from an outing

at the Rogers Centre on Tuesday night has been found

and returned to the Whitby Mental Health Centre.
Toronto police said Thursday afternoon that 31-year-old

Mylvaganam Vaasuhan was located downtown at

about 1:20 p.m. in the Albert and James streets area.
Police did not immediately release any more information

about Vaasuhan's return.
Vaasuhan, responsible for sex attacks on two young girls,

was the subject of a citywide search. Toronto and

Durham police issued a public safety alert and warned

that young girls were at risk.
The inmate was without medication, which he uses to

control his schizophrenia, paranoia and sexual urges.
Vaasuhan was with other patients and staff supervisors

at the Toronto Blue Jays game when he wandered off.
In 2002, he was found not criminally responsible by

reason of a mental disorder for sexual attacks on two

young girls, aged five and eight, at a playground.
Vaasuhan said he wanted to play with the girls and

take them to his "dungeon," police said.

After the girls were accosted, they ran home.
A court ordered Vaasuhan to remain at a medium

security unit in Whitby indefinitely, and he is banned

from having contact with anyone under the age of 14.
He is, however, eligible to participate in community

outings, such as the sporting event.

Toronto police have closed down the Kennedy Station bus
platform after a teenager was stabbed during a dispute
involving a group of people.
The victim, about 18, was stabbed in the chest and abdomen
at the bus platform at the station on Eglinton Ave. E. at
Kennedy Rd. at about 11:30 p.m.
Three men were seen running west from the station, across
Kennedy Rd. Witnesses reporting seeing a white four-door
car speed out of the parking lot and head south on
Kennedy shortly after the incident.
The victim was conscious and alert although bleeding from
his injuries and was taken on an emergency run to the
Sunnybrook Health Science Centre.
Police interviewed several of the victim’s friends who
witnessed the attack and said they can ID the suspect.
Last Friday, police were called to Kennedy subway station
where they found Nick Brown, 21, stabbed to death on a
subway car.
"Last Friday, police were called to the Kennedy subway station after
a TTC worker found the lifeless body of Nick Brown on an empty train.
The 21-year-old was stabbed to death. Investigators have released
several grainy surveillance camera images of a suspect but have
not many any arrests.
TTC chairman Adam Giambrone says the commission is reviewing
its security measures and will be installing more cameras and
special constables in the coming months. "

This station has had in the past several killings.

KINGSTON, Jamaica –
A foreign chemical substance has been discovered in Bob Woolmer’s blood
and tissue samples, the toxicology results have reportedly stated.
According to a well–placed government official, the substance, believed
to be poison, was found in samples taken from the coach’s stomach, urine
and blood. The Gleaner has also been reliably informed that help has been
sought from Scotland Yard in the analysis of the results.
On Saturday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields confirmed the
receipt of the toxicology report, but refused to comment on the contents.
"We have some results from toxicology now, but they will require further
investigation and analysis, and therefore it would be totally inappropriate
for me to elaborate any further on that," Shields said.
Woolmer, 58, the Pakistan cricket team coach was found unconscious in
his Jamaica Pegasus hotel room four weeks ago by a chambermaid.
He was pronounced dead at hospital and a subsequent post–mortem
conducted by government pathologist, Ere Sheshiah, found that death
resulted from asphyxia due to manual strangulation. Prior to that
announcement, the police said that they would be relying on histology
and toxicology analysis of Mr. Woolmer’s tissue sample to give them an
idea of the events leading to the coach’s death.
"The histology is back. I have not seen it, but it is the toxicology that
we are still working on ... the toxicology is much more important,"
Assistant Commissioner of Police Les Green said, yesterday.
Histology results will help the pathologist to arrive at a time of death,
which has not yet been established, while the toxicology should
justify or rebut speculations that the 6ft 1in–, 250–pound Woolmer
was poisoned before being strangled by his unknown attacker or
attackers.
Owing to Woolmer’s size, many had suggested that he may have
been weakened before being strangled and the toxicology report
may have confirmed this theory.
News had surfaced that Woolmer may have ingested a dose of aconite,
a poison which causes the body’s organs to shut down and causes
death through asphyxiation within 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, some members of the Pakistan team may be asked to
make their way back to Jamaica for the coroner’s inquest which
begins next Monday. ACP Green said Coroner Patrick Murphy had
made it clear that he wanted members of that delegation back for
the inquest.
Kent Pantry, the Director of Public Prosecutions, who will be
marshalling evidence on behalf of the Crown, and Murphy are to
meet later this week to decide the list of witnesses for the inquest.

US gunman sent messages during massacre...

The gunman who killed 32 students on a Virginia university campus
sent photographs, video and writings to a US television network
during his bloody massacre.

The correspondence, sent to NBC News, was time-stamped during
the two hours after Cho Seung-Hui had killed two people in their
dormitory, but before he slaughtered 30 more in a classroom
building at Virginia Tech.

MSNBC, an affiliate of ninemsn, has announced that clips from
the video will be released to the network soon.

Police said that NBC News immediately notified authorities
about the messages.

"Earlier today, NBC News in New York received correspondence
that we believe to have been from Cho Seung-Hui, the gunman
responsible for the fatal shootings in Norris Hall," police
superintendent Steve Flaherty told a news conference.

"The correspondence included multiple photographs, video
and writings.

Flaherty said the material had been turned over to the
Federal Bureau of Investigation, but gave no further details
about what it contained.

six and a half millennia pre-Frodo, back when Treebeard was

barely shaving"

The latest book at last finished by 81 year old, Christopher Tolkien,

son of J.R.R., out of manuscripts left behind by his dad.

As the tale of the children of Húrin was also one of the first

Tolkien started writing, there were numerous versions over the

years, both in prose and verse, some longer, some shorter, none

of them truly finished. He collated all these different versions and

edited them together to a 259 page narrative

called "The Children of Húrin", which while not the intimate

point of view story of the his more popular books, is still far

more fleshed out and detailed than the versions we've read before.

I have not gotten my copy yet but I have noticed that

(Blacksburg-WABC, April 17, 2007) - We continue to learn many more
details about the Virginia Tech tragedy.
It was a very emotional day on the campus.
Tears flowed as students gathered at a special service to remember
those killed.
As for the gunman, campus police say 23-year-old Cho Seung-Hui was
an undergraduate senior who emmigrated from South Korea.
University officials describe him as a troubled loner.
We have live Eyewitness News team coverage starting with Jeff Rossen,
who is on campus in Blacksburg, Virginia with the latest on the
investigation.
Investigators spent the day delving into the life of the gunman.
They are piecing together clues in an effort to find out what sent
Cho Sueng-Hui off.

"Inside the mind of a killer. Cho Sueng-Hui was a 23-year old
English major at Virginia Tech. He is a senior who showed signs
of trouble long before he allegedly killed 32 others before turning
his gun on himself.
A professor says Cho's creative writing became so disturbing, he
was advised to seek counseling. Still, what would cause a
student to snap like this?
Investigators are hoping his dorm room reveals answers.
ABCNews has learned Cho left a long and troubling note behind.
In it, he writes "You caused me to do this."
According to published reports, Cho railed against "rich kids,"
"debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans on campus."

"The only thing that we know about him was that he was
a loner, and we're having difficulty trying to find information
about him," Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said.
Law enforcement sources tell ABCNews that after Cho shot
and killed two people at the dormitory, he went back to
his own room to re-arm and re-load.
He then went across campus to Norris Hall, where police
say he went classroom to classroom on a killing spree.

Many suggestions came out at my workplace today including
suggestions of security gates etc. The security gates and xrays
would mean no pens or folders etc being allowed on school
grounds because of the metal detection. Could we afford to
pay security staff to check all bags? Impossible.
What is causing people to show such disregard for human life?
It was said 1 of the guns was purchase 30 days before this
killing spree. A planned murder and how was it his family and
friends could not detect changes in this young man?

(CP) - It's not just David Middleton who wants to see justice for
his daughter, Rebecca. Almost 11 years after the 17-year-old
Canadian was left to die on a remote road in Bermuda, many
people in the British colony want to see someone answer for her
death.
"The case of Rebecca Middleton and her murder has never been
forgotten by the Bermudian public," Kelvin Hastings-Smith,
lead counsel for the Middleton case, said from his office in
Hamilton, Bermuda.
"If you ask anyone on the street of Bermuda about
Rebecca Middleton, they will not answer with: 'Who?' "
"As far as Bermuda is concerned, there is a case of a
suspicious death for which no one has been brought to
justice."
Hastings-Smith said the case is of "extreme public importance"
and decided to employ the assistance of a well-known
British human-rights lawyer: Cherie Booth, the wife of
British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
"It's drawn a fair amount of attention to the case," Middleton
said.
He didn't realize who Booth was when he was first told about
her. He had just heard that she's a good human-rights lawyer.
And good help is expensive.
It has been reported that Booth's legal expertise costs C$400
per hour.
But raising funds has been something Middleton has grown
accustomed to - the 11 years of legal battles have cost in the
hundreds of thousands.
While many friends and family of the girl who grew up in
Belleville, Ont., think everything that can be done in the case
has already been tried, Middleton is not ready to give up.
"One of my son's says,'You've already been kicked two or
three times, why are you going back again?' ... Pigheaded,
I guess," he said.
"Both of them (men who were arrested in the case) violated
Becky's rights and just because somebody cut a deal in a
criminal court doesn't mean they can escape the
human-rights issues," said Middleton.
Rebecca Middleton travelled to Bermuda with her
girlfriend, Jasmine Meens, for a holiday in the summer
of 1996. The girls were to stay with Jasmine's father, Rick,
who lived on the island.
After two weeks of soaking up the sun, the girls went
out for a night on the town to celebrate Rebecca's
birthday. After much fun and a few alcoholic beverages, the
girls decided it was time to go home just after midnight.
They called a taxi three times, but it never came.
They accepted rides home; Jasmine with one man on a
bike and Rebecca with two men on a motorcycle.
Jasmine made it home. Rebecca was found dying in the
middle of a deserted road by a passing motorist.
She died before the ambulance came. She had been raped,
sodomized and stabbed.
In the days following, two men, Kirk Mundy and
Justis Smith, were questioned. Mundy gave a statement to
police implicating Smith in the murder.
Smith was charged with murder.
Bermuda's attorney general at the time, Elliot Mottley, cut
a deal with Mundy sentencing him to five years for
being an accessory in exchange for testifying against Smith.
But when the DNA evidence came back, only Mundy's
was found at the scene.
Smith's 1998 trial ended with an acquittal as the judge
dismissed the case citing a lack of evidence.
Attempts to retry Smith for murder were put to rest when
the Britain's Privy Council ruled he could not be put on trial
a second time for the murder.
Later, the Director of Public Prosecution decided against
considering new charges in the Middleton case.
But new hope was injected last November when Bermuda's
Chief Justice Richard Ground allowed a review into the
decision against new charges.
Hearings scheduled for April 16 and 17 will hear from both
parties about the decision made by the Director of
Public Prosecution.
"The DPP will obviously be standing by her decision and
we will be saying that is wrong and trying to persuade the
court why it was wrong," said Hastings-Smith.
If the court finds the Middleton family is right, then the
director may have to revisit her decision and there may be
an opportunity to lay new charges: serious sexual assault, rape
and kidnapping.
"Even if the judge rules against us ... then the family
still has remedies available to them," Hastings-Smith said,
without elaborating.
"I can't go any further ... I don't want to give the case
away in the media," he said
"An awful lot has been written about the Middleton death.
The court take a very dim view of matters being tried in
the press and I have no desire to get on the wrong side
of the chief justice."
"It's a very high profile matter here and in Canada."

Bank tellers say preacher's wife accused of murder had tried
to pass bad checks

SELMER, Tenn. (AP) - Bank tellers testified Saturday that a
preacher's wife accused of murdering her husband with a
shotgun was in financial trouble and that their bank had
caught her trying to deposit bad checks.
Prosecutors have said the couple's account at Regions Bank
in Selmer was overdrawn by $5,000, and that bank
employees called Mary Winkler several times in the days
before Matthew Winkler was found shot to death in the
church parsonage.
Diane Hollingsworth, a teller at Regions Bank, said she
talked with Mary Winkler on March 21, 2006 - one day
before her husband was found dead.
"I just advised her that if she came in and talked to our
bank manager that there would be some way that we
could work it out - that it was not an impossible
situation," Hollingsworth said. "I advised her if she
wasn't able to come in, it would be turned over to our
security department."
Prosecutors have said Mary Winkler was caught up in
a swindle known as the "Nigerian scam," in which
victims are promised riches if they advance money to
cover processing expenses.
Defence lawyers have said the Winklers were both taken
in by the scam.
Mary Winkler, 33, was arrested a day after the shooting
on the Alabama coast, about 550 kilometres away, where
she was spotted driving the family minivan with their
three young daughters inside.
Investigators say she admitted shooting her husband and
that it had something to do with his constant criticism.
Three bank tellers testified that Mary Winkler had a
separate account at the First State Bank in Henderson,
about 30 kilometres north of Selmer, and tried to deposit
a number of large checks from that account into the Selmer
bank, including one for $7,000.
"I called to explain to her that the items she had
been depositing on the First State account, there were
no funds there," Hollingsworth said.
"That simply was not legal."
The tellers also said Mary Winkler deposited a $6,455 check,
allegedly from a Canadian Trust Bank, in December 2005
that turned out to be fraudulent.
On Friday, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Special
Agent Chris Carpenter said Mary Winkler told him about
her marital problems and the shooting.
"I don't remember going to the closet or getting
the gun," Winkler said, according to her
statement to Carpenter. "The next thing I remember
was hearing a loud boom, and I remember thinking it
wasn't as loud as I thought it would be."
The statement said Matthew Winkler criticized her
for "the way I walk, what I eat, everything.
It was just building up to this point. I was just
tired of it. I guess I just got to a point and snapped."
The trial is expected to last two weeks.

TORONTO — "Simon Wynberg used to feel betrayed
when he thought about his long struggle to get
Dalton McGuinty to live up to his promise to provide
treatment for school-age children with autism.
But after a Supreme Court of Canada ruling effectively
closed the door on 28 families who wanted Ontario
to pay for the expensive treatment for their autistic
children, he has gone way beyond that."
In the 2003 campaign, Mr. McGuinty, then in opposition,
promised to end the Progressive Conservative
government's "unfair and discriminatory" practice
of cutting off funding for the treatment when autistic
children turned 6.
In office, however, he delayed acting on the pledge, which
prompted the parents' suit.

This was also the case when he said he wouldn't raise
taxes and he did.

Canadian police were part of a massive operation that busted an alleged
web pedophile ring with more than 300 members worldwide.
The London-based Child Exploitation and
Online Protection Centre (Ceop), which led the operation, said a
number of children had been rescued from abuse.
The key suspects were from the U.K. and a number of arrests
had been made, Ceop chief executive Jim Gamble said.
"The CEOP Centre can confirm it is currently engaged in a live
investigation relating to an online area believed to be used by a
significant number of individuals with a sexual interest in
children," Ceop said in a statement.
Ceop spokesperson Sarah Shakespeare told CTV.ca that
Canadian officers, along with those from Britain, the U.S., and
Australia, were involved in the undercover operation.
But Ceop could not provide further details, saying the
investigation is ongoing with the Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT) and
that authorities continue to work to identify and trace suspects.
"For this reason, we are unable to disclose further details, or
an arrest breakdown at this stage. However we can confirm this
inquiry relates to suspects both in the U.K. and abroad," Ceop said.
The British-led VGT is made up of a partnership of agencies from
around the world, including the RCMP, that works together to
protect children from online child abuse.
Gamble said since Ceop was set up last April, its work has led
to 27 predatory pedophiles being placed into custody and
about 70 children safeguarded from abuse.
It also has 18 investigations currently under way to identify
child sex victims from clues given away in abuse photographs.
Ceop is a government agency affiliated to Britain's Serious
Organized Crime Agency.
The news coincides with a major VGT conference that has
opened in Washington, DC.
Earlier this month, Austrian investigators announced they
uncovered one of the largest Internet child-porn rings in
history, involving 2,300 people and possibly more than
100 Canadians.
Toronto police say with advances in storage and online
technology, the amount of child pornography being seized
by police is skyrocketing.
Det. Sgt. Scanlan of the Toronto child exploitation section
said investigators viewed about two million such images
last year alone.

It is comforting to know some of our police are busy

Today marks Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, a

Easter. Practitioners typically give up something dear to them to mark

their faith -- whether a favourite food, hobby or vice.

Traditionally, Lent includes days of fasting and abstinence.

I am having a difficult time deciding what to give up..

smoking is my #1 position now except I DONT SMOKE...

if thats no good i will give up pancakes...hate them anyway

'Dr. Phil' lawyer responds to suit over Natalee Holloway segment
LOS ANGELES
An attorney says two brothers who filed a defamation
lawsuit against the "Doctor Phil" show for airing a segment about
their roles as former suspects in the disappearance of
Natalee Holloway should not be entitled to punitive damages.
Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, both residents of Aruba, filed the suit
in December seeking unspecified damages against talk show host
Phillip McGraw, C-B-S Television Distribution Group and private
investigator Jamie Skeeters.
William Haggerty, an attorney for McGraw and C-B-S, denied his
clients intentionally misrepresented any fact to the brothers or
acted with malicious intent.
An attorney representing the brothers was unavailable for
comment.
Holloway, a Mississippi native, was 18 when she
disappeared on May 30th, 2005, while on a trip to
Aruba with classmates from Mountain Brook high
school.
She was last seen getting into a car with the brothers
and their friend, Joran van der Sloot.
Police spent months searching for the missing teen, but the case
did not lead to any criminal trial in Aruba.
The brothers were released from police custody following
their arrest and have not been charged in the case.

If schoolgirl killer Karla Homolka decides to return to Ontario, with
or without a child, Niagara Region police will gather evidence with
an eye to seeking a recognizance order to guard public safety, Attorney
General Michael Bryant said yesterday.
His comments came on the heels of reports Homolka gave birth
Feb. 3 to a seven-pound boy at a Montreal hospital.
"The last contact that Niagara police had with her was that she
expressly was not going to come into this province," Bryant said
at a Liberal policy conference in Niagara Falls.
He would not comment on whether authorities would take steps to
remove a child from her care should she come back to her home
province.
"We have no evidence that she's coming here," he said,
adding, "actually, I have no evidence that she's had a kid."
According to an anonymous letter sent to
Journal de Montréal, Homolka was admitted to St. Mary's
Hospital Jan. 30, but was sent home hours later after her
contractions proved to be false labour.
The letter said hospital staff recognized Homolka and refused
to treat her.
On Feb. 2, she was readmitted, under the name
Leanne Teale, and gave birth the following day.
The birth was a complicated one, with the baby's umbilical
cord rolled up around his neck, an anonymous source at the
hospital's mother-child unit told the newspaper.
It's believed Homolka, 36, was released from the hospital, which
is located in a residential area northwest of downtown
Montreal near St. Joseph's Oratory, on Monday morning.
The report says Homolka met the baby's father through
her former lawyer, Sylvie Bordelais, and they plan to
marry in the Antilles islands as soon as they can get a passport
for their son.
Bordelais did not return the Toronto Star's calls, but yesterday
told the TVA television network suggestions Homolka is
living in a bungalow on Montreal's South Shore are
inaccurate, as is the intimation she introduced her to the
child's father.
Calls to Homolka's parents in St. Catharines went unanswered
yesterday.
According to Quebec's Order of Nurses, the hospital is conducting
an internal investigation into a complaint Homolka was turned
away when she tried to check in. "We don't have any reason to
believe at this point that any discrimination has occurred," said
spokesperson Chantal Charron. The order's disciplinary
committee has been in contact with the hospital, Charron told
the Star.
Tim Danson, lawyer for Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, the
teens slain by Homolka and her former husband Paul Bernardo
in 1991, said yesterday the parents are despondent by recent reports.
"There's a very disturbing irony to all of this," said the Toronto
lawyer. "They'll never be grandparents from Kristen and Leslie, and
won't have a normal life.
And, here's Karla Homolka who's free and giving birth – that's the
disturbing irony."
Homolka served 12 years in prison for the sex murders of both
teens as well as the fatal drug rape of her sister, Tammy, 15.
She was released from prison in July 2005 and made her
home in Joliette, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal. Five months
later, a Quebec Superior Court justice lifted court-imposed
conditions placed on her freedoms.

Rampant rumours, tips and a string of circumstances

suggest that Homolka is now married and, in the past

few days, gave birth to a bouncing baby boy in a Montreal

hospital.
If all of this is true, it appears that the fantasy she held for

Homolka's apparent motherhood is even more outrageous, considering

that a Quebec judge initially ordered her to stay away from children

Natalee Holloway, an 18-year-old graduate of
Mountain Brook High School in Birmingham, Alabama,
traveled to the Caribbean island of Aruba with 125
members of her senior class.
On Monday, May 30, 2005, she did not show up for her flight
back to the United States.Witnesses said Natalee was last
seen leaving a nightclub in a car with three
males -- Joran Van Der Sloot, 17; Deepak Kalpoe, 21,
and Satist Kalpoe, 18. The three originally told authorities
that they dropped the Alabama honors student at the
hotel where she was staying, but their story has changed
many times since the early days in the search

A father who shot to death his teenage daughter's drug-dealing
boyfriend has been found guilty of second-degree murder.
The eight jurors, who had been deliberating since Wednesday,
also recommended that 50-year-old Kim Walker be eligible for
parole after 10 years -- the most lenient possible sentence.
Justice Jennifer Pritchard agreed, telling Walker: "You're a
desperate man and no doubt the hearts of most parents reach
out to you. But you wrongfully killed this man."
Second-degree murder carries a mandatory life imprisonment
sentence. .........
Several residents in the small Saskatchewan community of
Yorkton had shown their support for Walker, who shot convicted
drug-dealer James Hayward, 24, in March 2003. Hayward
bled to death in his own home.
Walker's daughter, Jadah, had been taking morphine with
Hayward. She was 16 at the time and had struggled with
drug addiction.
